So I was bumbling around trying to enable and disable my show feedback status in order to give some love on some recent deals and inadvertently hit a members profile when I went to do so. What do I see ? Their full name on display for all to see.... WTF ??? While I acknowledged that this is a personal choice, I also have my suspicions that this member has english as a second language and may not be aware that they have displayed this information for all to see. I have of course contacted them and alerted them to this in case it was a mistake, but I am wondering given the nature of our community if it could be made quite clear that when filling out this information it is made quite clear in black and white that it will be visible for all to see and could be a security risk if chosen or if in fact it is actually needed as an option for the site. Just my Grams worth of opinion. Also how many people reading this actually do display their real full name in their profile ?
Yes I've seen a few people put full names down HAH each their own Everybody here should know how the interwebs works I hope
D'oh. Even included my middle name! I've seen one put their personal email into the website link box... Some people don't really think twice about stuff like that I suppose. But I think letting them know is the best thing to do, make them aware of how silly things like that can have it's adverse consequences.
I agree but there is no need to provide directions, and my question is pointed more towards an unintentional display.

Hi Errol I never restarted my trade info when rejoining after my inglorious hissy fit departure when GP closed the original one and only GD forum . This tho has nothing to do with feedback but is to do with information that people provide upon joining the site that is displayed on their profile for everyone to see. My concern is that people innocently fill out the listed category's while joining the site and don't realise that the information will be displayed for everyone to see. Like is your surname E Co...y ? and did you know it was on display for everyone to see ?
Come to think of it, it is even worse when people also innocently combine their actual location along with their real name, as all a basic thinking crim type has to do is reference the local phone directory etc to pinpoint a sitting duck. Sit on SS all day watching the sales threads, skim the profiles, connect a name with a sale/location/address. The rest is quite rudimentary. I really don't think I am being too paranoid about this and think it needs to be considered as part of the security for the site and the community here. It might be something that has slipped through so far but I do think it is something that needs to be addressed not only for the members security but also for the owners of the site as there is always the possibility of a litigious deep pocketed member passing the duty of care elsewhere upon misfortune or even a genuine case of being tracked and targeted by information freely provided here by an unfortunate soul. I really don't want to make a song and dance of it but it is something I stumbled upon and given the varied background of members found here who have english as a second or third language or who are not totally web orientated/compatible/Savvy etc I do think it is up to the owner of the site to do due diligence and also cover their own ass in the interest of us all. Realistically it would only take a single person to show that they were on all probability robbed as a result of the information displayed for all to see here on SS even if by mistake, wrong house, wrong information, wrong person, it wouldn't matter. "I got the info from the SS site, it said John smith bought a gold bar and he lived in Bendigo but there was no gold bar at that address so I raped his wife and daughter instead to try and find out where it was hidden..." Wrong ? Sick ? Misinformed ? Doesn't really matter or help any sort of victim even if the information was wrong, doesn't help the site any either if it is marked as a source of intel for such people. But that would never happen right?
