Trying to understand the logic for these coins market prices and availability however its looking pretty much confusing so far

The Mouse, Ox, Rabbit and Snake are easily available in the $95-130 range, the dragon is difficult to find and I can see it around $200+ while the Tiger doesn't seem to be available anywhere.

Surprisingly, the mouse and ox have the lowest mintage around 3000 and 2000 while the Tiger and Rabbit have been minted to the maximum at 5000.

Are the Dragon and Tiger the most desirable coins in the whole series?
Why are the mouse and ox the cheapest in the market even though being the oldest and with the lowest mintage figures ?

    Cheers

    Assuming you are talking 1oz?

Because it is my opinion (I don't think Perth Mint have categorically stated one way or the other) that these have recently been re-minted. Look for them to move up towards their maximum mintage of 5,000.

My assumption is that Dragon and Tiger has a wider appeal, other than just people who observe Lunar New Year. How many non asian people who has Tiger and Dragon tattoos?

Proof does not has the wide appeal as the bullion counterpart. So Proof appeal more to the collector or numi followers.

But comes to bullion...Mouse 1/2 oz hoes for a few hundred dollar, 10 oz is pushing $1000. Because of their lower mintage. By the time Dragon was launched...stackers was ready to raid the mint.

    Hi Rbaggio,

I though that when the mint declares the mintage figure it means that its not going to re mint anymore apart from the kilo bullion coins, correct me if I'm wrong.

^ That's for the bullion coins. For the proof coins they allow themselves to mint up to the limit (in this case 5,000) over coming years if they so want to.

Didn't know about this one, crazy that a 1/2oz bullion coin sells for more than $100+, its outperforming all the Lunar I 1/2oz and even the 1999 rabbit with lower mintage.

I've been looking for 1oz proof tiger for a while.. I've seen a number of ebay listengs which ended at around $240 -> $280 a few months back..

Really wanted to complete the set, but still not prepared to pay that much premium :|
I'd rather buy S1 proof at that price..

The Perth Mint, on their official Coin Collector Blog say this about declared mintages.

I am pleased to announce we've started the process of declaring the mintage figures for numismatic coins issued since 1986.

As of today, (22 November 2012) production is officially closed-off for all 1986 to 2002-dated numismatic coins that have not sold their maximum mintage.

Looking ahead, we will declare mintages for 2003 to 2011-dated numismatic coins that are not sold out following our annual review of year-dates in early 2013.

    More info:

    http://blog.perthmint.com.au/2012/11/22/perth-mint-declares/#comments

Until we have an official statement and confirmation from Perth I won't be buying any of the older proof lunars except for those that are sold-out.

^ ie. The Perth Mint could be striking earlier Lunar numismatics now and once they have made what they want, declare the mintage closed sometime this year.

Very slippery with the wordings the Perth Mint.

I'm shocked, having invested recently in a Lunar I proof full set ...should have done a more serious due diligence.

^ I think you're ok Kam, no more Lunar Series I coins, proof or otherwise can be struck since 2008 so the mintages of the proof coins is what they are, no more will be added.
