If you found someones else's stack buried in the bush what would you do. Tough one, but I think I would likely leave it alone because I realise how much effort goes into stacking and empathize with what it might feel like to lose your stack. Having said that if I came back in a years time and the stack was still there, maybe then I'd claim it. What's the code between stackers when it comes to this ?
Take it and leave a note in a bottle with contact details... because if you found it, it's just as likely someone else will too! At least that's what I've done the last two times this happened to me :|

I would assume it fell out of a boat in which case it would be finders keepers with a percentage donation to SS for good karma. lol. nah seriously, I dunno. Probably leave it. Why? did you find someone's stash?
If its on private property then it'd depend on if its a modern day stash or an old forgotten one. If an old one then I'd approach the land owner for permission to metal detect on his land with 50/50 split of finds. If its a modern stash then I'd leave it alone. If its out in the public bush someplace, I'm probably calling dibs on it. >

If they were older coins and seemed that the stash was buried more than 5 years ago - id take it all. If it were newer coins, id take 10% and bury it back - i think i would do whats above.

I would love to be able to say that I'd leave it hidden but damn it if I wouldn't be tempted. I'm not thief but then again I've never been in a position to test my conviction I honestly wish that I knew I was the honest man I hold myself in my own mind to be....
I have pondered the same Nugget - I'll add another for you do I give to charity out of real charity or do I do it because it makes me feel good to give/help and if I do it because if makes me feel good is it really charity or am I like someone buying drugs just buying a temporary feeling? Still pondering that one when I have a slow day in the office.
I never give to charity but I'd help anyone who needed help and I'd never pick up a $100 dollar note if i saw one lying on the ground. Charities just aren't my thing, they piss me off by blocking my way, interfere with my daily life, annoy the crap out of me for donations, spam my home phone (DNC doesn't work on charities!). I don't know if I would take a hidden stash...if it was large enough and I was desperate enough then surely yes but for the most part, no I wouldn't.

I would do all I could to find the true owner and get it back safely into their hands. (I wouldn't expect a reward either). Sure, they might have chosen a dumb place to hide it, but that doesn't give me any right to take advantage of them. That stack might represent a family's very survival in the coming collapse. Who knows how much sweat and toil and sacrifice went into creating it and trying to preserve it. I probably take photos of the site first, and document the entire hoard carefully with trustworthy witnesses, so there could be no question of my having kept any part of it. I'd leave appropriate contact details at the site so the owners could get in touch with me. I'd probably advertise the find here too. I think the law says found things need to be declared and held for 3 months, and then they're yours. In this case I think that would not be enough time. I'd allow at least a couple of years to elapse and maybe even longer. Perhaps the owners are overseas for a time and can't get back. Basically, I'd do what I hope you would do if the situation were reversed. (Good on you Nugget and Smoothcriminal for doubting yourselves! That shows character and integrity!) (And if anyone DOES hide a stack like this one day - please consider attaching some basic contact details - at least!)
