    Hi,

I can't figure out how I can open the backed-up .dat wallet from another computer.

I have my wallet on a desktop, backed it up, then I installed a wallet on my laptop too.

Copied the .dat file to the laptop, but I can't open that .dat file in any way. Can't figure out how to load it. Perhaps there is a .dat file somewhere on the machine and I have to replace it?

    :/

You have to replace the wallet.dat with your stored wallet.dat

If you stored the old wallet on your PC like "peters_LTC.dat" rename it to wallet.dat and copy it into the appdata folder. ( replace the existing wallet.dat with your original wallet.dat on your laptop)

App data folder maybe not visable for you. You have to change folder options to make this folder visable because its a system folder.

I was thinking about this, but where do I find the "appdata folder"?

Dogecoin QT is under the Program Files. Didn't find any other folders elsewhere. I don't think I have to simply copy wallet.dat to the Program Files Dogecoin folder. But I tried this too and didn't load anything.

Where does Dogecoin QT install its appfiles?

Windows search didn't reveal the place...

Start Button, Run, Then type "%appdata%" without the quote marks but with the % symbols

Oddly, my Windows XP-running laptop has no "Run" in the Start Menu. My other machines have... this one doesn't.

On my Desktop with Windows Vista I could easily find the "AppData" folder, the "DogeCoin" folder in it with the "wallet" file.

Because my laptop has Windows XP's mobile version and that one has a weaker file search and no "Run" option, I couldn't find the "AppData" folder nor the "DogeCoin" folder.

I found the "Application Data" folder manually in XP with the "DogeCoin" folder and have replaced the wallet.dat with the transferred one. It finally worked! :D

    Thanks for helping!

just type %appdata% into the address bar of a folder window, or even a new page of internet explorer.

<<< I just edited my post, as in a matter of a minute I found the solution...

OK, so the low-tech XP is a bit confusing, but it works on it similarly. Folders appear differently and the search doesn't find it.

My coins all show up the way they have to and my addresses as well! :D

You can open a wallet up on another computer but it is not recommended to actually use the same wallet on two different computers with transactions as eventually new keys get created and they won't sync.

What do you mean by that?

What "new keys" can get generated?

I'm still in the learning process, playing around...

I'm not sure what would happen if someone sent me coins right now. Would they show up on both PCs or not... :/

    if someone steal wallet.dat

does that mean that he/she can send over our balance of coins based on that file ?

is that how it works ?

Yes unless you have encrypted your wallet.dat with a password

wallet.dat contains the private key pairs for the public key addresses
if you've got that you can do whatever you want with the balance

The private keys you cant see into the wallet saoftware, but you can extract them with order "dumpprivkey" on the console.
Everybody who has acess to the priatekaey can import all coin into his own wallet.
