I've been thinking about what will happen when that expires. Maybe the government will be forced to extend the guarantee, the banks are having a hard enough time getting domestic deposits as it is. I plan to spread my fiat funds across as many institutions as possible.

China has severe problems, but I don't have time to get into all of that. The main thing to remember is that China is a very important customer that might grow into a very demanding customer. I have read that the 2011 or 2012 increase in China's coal consumption will equal AU's entire production. What happens when you cannot voluntarily produce as much coal as China desires. No problem, the US military will protect you. But unfortunately, the future US military will likely be a shadow of its current self. For you guys, I am glad Rudd is out. I don't know anything about Gillard (sp?), but I believe AU needs another important strategic ally. My guess is that India is your best bet. If India is an important trading partner, it will be very hard for China to muscle AU regarding strategic commodities. AU is sitting in a great position with its mineral wealth. The long term problem is how to protect that wealth when the US military withdraws from Asia and China starts acting like the local bully.

Careful what you wish for, I'd be happy for silver at $75/oz as long as nothing too insane happens.

Carefully typing that out in public view boy, ATO/Big Brother could be reading.

I don't think they will get rid of the guarantee completely - probably just lower the cap amount from the current $1 million. In that case I will just ensure that I spread my savings around between several banks, each with an amount underneath the new cap level.

There is a country in Europe where you can buy gold in the banks with free storage and making profit on gold is not taxable.
Don't ask me more on this publicly.
