Well I tried to negotiate my next contract, where I am paid in gold.
Unfortunatly it seems that the company would prefer to pay me in fiat.

I thought it was fun trying anyway.

My father-in-law used to be paid in gold sovereigns, but that was back in the days when gold was money and hyperinflation was still fresh in everyones memory.

Unfortunately I have to pay my taxes in legal tender so I have to get it from somewhere. If they accepted taxes in gold it might be worth trying a bit harder

They do. There is provision for it in the law and the Australian Constitution. However, unfortunately, you tend to be dealing with administrative staff and bean counters at the ATO, who have no idea what the legal requirements are. Be fun to try it though. :)

Given the option to pay you in something that every year continues to be devalued versus something that increases in value each year, any sane company would know which one to choose.

How were you negotiating in ounces? If it was that could be suicide for any sane employer.
On the other hand if you were asking for your salary in $ terms in gold it would be nearly impossible to give you the correct amount & how do you factor premiums into it .

What a minefield for both sides i dont blame them for refusing

If it was me i would say theres your cash buy your own friggin gold dont try to complicate my life .

What if you asked to be paid in round 50's? Aren't they circulating legal tender? I base this on: http://forums.silverstackers.com/message-18366.html#p18366

    To the ATO:
    * The employer could argue he only needs to pay payroll tax on face value
    * The employee could argue he only needs to pay PAYG tax on the face value

Umm i think the thread title is "getting paid in gold "
My response would be the same .But if you had a more malleable employer than myself it could work out good for both but hardly worth the headache & stuffing around for a few bucks .So still no

That then hits the minimum wage wall with people needing to be paid $15.51/hr that in round 50's would be 31 coins an hour @ a conservative $12/coin thats $372/hr - nice work if you can get it :)
