Sell the sterling silver jewellery on this site, shame to lose the premiums. Use the money to buy silver bars.

The cheapest stirling silver you are likely to find is going to be pre-45 pre-decimal which can often be had for spot price or just above.

Stirling bars do sell but most people want 999 for their bars. If you are going utilitarian and stacking bars it is because you are more concerned with getting the most bang for your buck in the smallest space so having that extra 7.5% copper sitting around is a waste of space!

Have you got all the gear for making your own bars? It is not a free process converting from jewellery into bars and you will spend money to do it and end up with a product worth less money (depending on how sexy your bars are of course!)

    Oh, and welcome!

Thank you very much for the warm welcome.

@ Jislizard. Yes, I already had a torch(just one that connects to the butane canisters you can get at coles, big W, or bunnings for $5 for 4 cans which last quite a while) borax and sterling silver, also my 1 ounce ingot mold arrived today(which cost $18 shipped from CA U.S.A). All I need now is another torch some more borax and my 1 and 2 ounce crucible's which are on their way and cost only $14 for 2 1 ounce and 2 2 ounce crucible's shipped, also a tumbler would be nice but i can't find any that are cheaper than $30 unless (i use a drill tumbler).

I agree that the copper in sterling (or what ever the jewler used) is a waste of space, I would love to refine it myself or if i could get it done cheap even better, but I dont have alot of sterling only about 8 ounces at the moment, most of which has already been melted on charcoal blocks so it can fit in smaller containers, so i can't goto a refiner, also nitric acid is hard to find (can not find it any where, at all).

I was also thinking about melting down some of my crap coins (either really worn or just damaged or undesirable in any way) to make some more sterling ingots and some 50% ingots (just a thought)

I can also get .999 or .9999 silver cheaper than I can get any other silver (except for jewlery) and was wondering if i should make my own pure silver ingots/rounds? Should i mix it with my sterling and with a bit of math work out the purity?

Sorry, rambled on a bit there but that is what i am thinking of or am doing as a bit of a hobby

    Thanks again guys
