I don't know what it is, but for me a silver coin should be silver, no gilding, no colouring of any kind, and I find the colours tacky to say the least.

    Is it just me?

Gilded is all I'll accept on a silver coin. Some of the overpriced PM coins like Transformers are pretty decent but would never buy them.

There was a thread for the ugliest coloured coins... some impressive contenders out there.

Yeah, I'm with House, I do like gilded, but that is the extent of it.

Notoriously bad investment, that's the main reason I hate them. The stamp printers most mints have lack decent res as well, never been impressed with the finish.

Then there is gilded coins. The PM has the technique down to perfection, I love the look of them, and yet they get no love either - never fully understood that.

There's only two colors a silver coin should be.

    1. Silver
    2. Tarnished Silver

Hate is a strong word, I am now indifferent to them.

I have changed my whole outlook on what constitutes a coin these days. Modern coins from the mint with the full face value and legal tender status can't even be spent in a shop or deposited in a bank anymore so this is what I find irritating now.

I had already discounted coloured coins as being a real coin so they didn't bother me. Same with holographs, lenticular, scented, glass inclusions, odd shapes and all the other gimmicks that people are calling coins these days.

The Lunar dragons are the only coloured coins I have. They are part of the greater 2012 Lunar Dragon set which is missing most of the proofs and gemstones. I picked up a set of the coloured coins below issue price a few years after they were released. I don't think they hold their value like the proofs.

I also have the gilded for that set but that is the only one.

I forgot about those dragons. I have a few of the black dragons (Berlin). One with a PF70. Those are nice. I do have a few colored coins that I've tucked away and never sold. It's amazing how interest change over time. When I first came into this wonderful world back in 2010, I bought everything I could get my hands on. Once my thinking evolved based on information I've learned here and elsewhere, I naturally gravitated to the pure silver stuff. On occassion I do buy gilded, as I love them. See video below. But I also remembered that I have the Red Whelsh Dragon, Santa Maria Great Ship, RCM Titanic, First Car to Drive Across Australia, to name a few. I never sold them, but sold most everything else with color.

I don't care for the vast majority of them, but once in a while I come across one that I think looks pretty decent..

World of Wonders do some good stuff. I do have a couple of those. Roman Collesium and Mt Rushmore and Dome in Florence. Never sold those either, lol, thanks for the reminder.

I think most people hate them and consider them inferior to standard bullion, of course it depends on the particular coin / bullion in question but overall its a waste of time and money (usually you pay a premium which like a firecracker goes up in smoke not long after you purchase it!)

Might be a good investment if you can buy them at spot or bullion price as the occasional person likes them or newbs.. so you could make a profit.. of course the demand pool will be small so you only want to buy a few as demand would be very finite.

    I get that feeling!

The one exception I would have is the Canadian Spy Coin (not silver though)

As well as it being the world's first circulating colour coin it has a great story behind it, every collection should have one!
