I think $350 is a bargain price (unless you bought at retail price). I expect the dragon to do very well price wise given the huge demand.
Come back in a few weeks time when the hype for this is a fraction less and everyone is chasing the next dragon bonanza, which I believe will be the 10 coloured set. People who only got 1, or who had a cool lucky number will want their full $500 or whatever before they part with it, the dealers who got 10-20? will try for $500 because they don't want to sell too cheap. If there are any left they will come down in increments until they are all gone. The Dealers know these things are rubbish, just bullion coins with a bit of paint and some fancy cardboard. last thing they need is to be left with half a dozen sitting on the shelf once the hype is over. Then they may revert back to normal bullion status. The tigers may be doing well but you need to have serious money to try and complete a set. Add in to that, the difficulty in getting hold of one at a reasonable price, even if you live in Perth, attend the ANDA show and queue at 07:30 and wait in line for a few hours you are not guaranteed to get one. I think a few people were very dissapointed with the Perth Mint this time, maybe they would go through all this again for a snake, but would you put yourself through this for a goat, or a cow? In order for the Perth Mint to make more money and appease all the people who got left out they will have to increase the mintage, or at least, put more of them in boxes. this may kill off the value of the earlier releases, or may increase them. All in all I think that the perth mint have done a great job making Dragons, but a poor job getting them into the hands of the people who want them. They have probably made a lot of money as well.
There was no queue when I got there and the queue only started at 9:00am. I think Perth Mint are trying to hype to demand. When the doors opened, people behind me ran past me to get a better position. I did see dealers with Perth Mint bags at their tables with dragons it so I don't think it was a level playing field fromt he beginning.
I wasn't there at all so I was only going by what I read in the other posts when it came to the queueing! I guess there was the queue outside and then the one inside for the Dragons. I remember the queue for the Mint Your Own Dollar when that was going to be limited. Big queue! And that was for $10 a pop! Last I saw the mobile mint it was $3 a go.
I got there at 9.30 on Saturday , just a small line , nothing drastic. Once inside it took 30 mins to get myself 2 Dragons and one High Relief Dragon . Staff were very polite and did a great job at getting the orders through. I had my 12 year old son with me anfd he never once complained about how long it took , and trust me that is saying something if you knew him All in all considering the demand on the day the PM did a great job . Yes , some dealers may have had a slight edge on the morning , but hey its not always what you know , mostly its who you know. Goes for any industry. 1000 dragons were never going to last long , no matter how they handled it. Just wanted to give a positive spin on the dragon release , usually only the people with negative experiences are vocal.
I had ANDA ticket #11, arrived at 9am. My brother, his wife & son infront of me. Waited an hr till open then 20mins at PM stall. Recieved coins #26 & 27. So I don't think the dealers got to hop the line, unless the were given higher numbers? (or selected numbers?) Perth mint staff were patient & very helpful. Probally took a bit too long to help each person considering the massive line. Nice!
The following dealers apparently got some: Downies Prospect coins International Numismatics Peter Strich Coins MR Roberts Western Sydney Stamps and Coins Coin Club VP coins Wow didn't realise VPcoins were such a heavyweight dealer. Peter Strich will sell them at whatever the market will bear.... ... and Downies will claim they didn't get any and then will discover them in a few months time when they will charge an arm and a leg.
I just received an email from Prospect Coins and Stamps. They have the ANDA dragon for sale @ 260.. I guess its not too bad compared to what other dealers are already charging. Limit of 1 per customer. I got mine
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2012-Per...370591398488?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item5648f7fa58 for those who missed out of getting on the perth show price this ebay auction was an opporunity missed.
You had to be at the show to get an allocation. Hmm they must have changed the way they allocate at the shows. I remmeber in the past they only gave dealers 10 coins each, thats if you went to the show. Thou we havent gone to these shows for along time now.
I don't see the problem with some dealers getting these coins, they probably are the dealers who buy the most coins wholesale. They should be allowed to take the good with the bad, how many proof coin series from the PM are duds compared to the popular ones? It looks like the webshop customers are the ones who have been shafted.
