What is the best source of data on the specifications (weight, diameter, thickness) of modern bullion silver and gold coins? Book? Website?
Depends strongly on the coins to be honest. The ASE and Perth Mint Kooks are 41mm The Philharmonic and Maples are 38. It also differs for gold too. This site has a good reference : http://www.airtiteholders.com/index.html Click the Millimeter Listing link at the top of the page. Has the basic diameters to get you started at least. Cheers
I always wonder why the 'thickness' of coins are not frequently published along with the diameter. if someone wanted to make copies, they could get the diameter right, and just make the coins thicker to get correct weight.
As rbaggio pointed out, specifications in Wikipedia or found through Google usually omit the thickness. I am wondering if there is a single source for the full specifications of all modern gold and silver bullion coins (including fractionals). Maybe we should have a go at compiling such a reference page? The Fisch only tests a limited number of coins and none of the modern silver bullion, and an accurate scale and caliper are only useful if you have known values to compare against.
Yeah, +1 Great idea, it'd be great to have reference page here with all sizes available etc. It'd make life a lot easier. I'm only just finding out how many different varieties there are just for Tigers, haven't even start looking at the rest of em, and I thought Pandas were varied!!! wow
There is one such page but it's in German language. http://www.bullionweb.de/ There are probably others too..
Golden that's great. Running through google translate, it is very readable in English. Dimensions table is at the bottom, e.g. http://translate.google.com/transla...www.bullionweb.de/goldmuenze/kruegerrand.html
Whilst we are on the subject of specifications I've found this this link for mintages which might be useful http://www.perthmint.com.au/investment-bullion-bars-and-coins-mintages.aspx Rockin'
