    Hello,

Russia is the next country to officially ban Bitcoins...
    http://www.primevalues.org/market-watch/russia-bans-bitcoins.htm

(did they forget about Litecoin, Dogecoin, Novacoin, Terracoin...? :p)

It's probably the same for all "alt coins". Russia is out. I suppose the Russian exchanges will be affected. They will either move to other countries or will close down.

I don't see why other countries/entities wouldn't follow the example. The USA and the EU, but also Japan could be next.

If this happens, then exchanges like Coinjar (USA), Bitstamp (Slovenia), Mt.Gox (Japan) and others will be strongly affected. If not closed down.

It's this easy to kill cryptocurrencies.

Is I just me or is all this banning pointing to the fact that BTC is worthy and the fear of it is lending it the legitimacy it needs?

    Certainly piqued my interest

It's this easy to hobble the uptake of crypto currencies by the general population and businesses that don't want to be on the wrong side of the "law".

Maybe it is because I grew up at the end of the Cold War, but I feel like anything Putin doesn't like is good for me!

Because people will continue to use them?

Well, but what happens if everyone starts banning them?

What if BRIC bans the dollar one day?

I don't think this is the end of all cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin might as well be a first generation currency. Something new might follow.

I heard people call Bitcoin "the Myspace of cryptocurrencies". Someone will detect the missing ingredients and correct the defects of the Bitcoin model and a successful new cryptocurrency can then emerge.

But central banks, IMF etc. won't like it.

Let me guess: Google will launch its own coin and they will make it "taxable". It'll be the big hit cryptocoin - also, central government and IMF-controlled.

Just my imagination running wild...
