Bought today, was told by auspost it was released today (1st November) Comes with no CoA, and a different presentation box. Also looks a bit lighter colour. 1/2oz Coloured Dragon Any idea, is it the same as the proof? What price range?
Have heard the mintage on these is 3800, made especially for the PO, they seem to be 'speciman' rather than proof - but have no actual hard evidence to support any of this. You would think with the tiny mintage that they would be a good investment. Going to pick one up tomorrow, reckon with a little investigating these could be a profitable purchase -hopefully. Edit: Have emailed the Perth Mint regarding these coins, if I hear back from them with some information I will post it here - still reckon these could be an investment oppurtunity, fingers crossed
Just got the definitive answer for the mystery of the PO lunar 1/2oz dragon from the Perth Mint. "Hi AndyRoo, The coin you are referring to is the 1/2oz Silver Bullion Coloured Year of the Dragon Coin. This product is exclusive to Australia Post stores in Australia. It comes in a presentation case only. There is no certificate of authenticity with this product. The official mintage for this coin is 48,000 worldwide. However, a small portion of this mintage (not more than 5,000 coins) is sold in a presentation case in Australia via Australia Post outlets. No other coin sizes of the silver bullion coloured coins are available in Australia individually. The 1oz silver bullion coloured coin is available in a Typeset collection only. Kind regards, Irina Kizitskaya AUSTRALIAN WHOLESALE MANAGER THE PERTH MINT" So they are the same as the typeset dragon, same as is in the 9 coin set (albeit a 1/2oz), no other coloured bullion coins to be released here, and only 5000 made available in a presenation case - technically half the mintage of the proof 1/2oz. Plus red is the only coloured 'bullion' to be made in 1/2oz - all the other colours from the 9 coin set will be made in 1oz only. Lots of things going for it, but they probably not going to be a $ winner. They are a really nice coin in the flesh. To my eye, I like the PO one better, will keep a couple for diversity and because I like it bottom left: PO 1/2oz - top: typeset 1oz - bottom right: PM 1/2oz Although, if I read Irina's email to the letter, she leaves the door open on the coloured 9 coin set being available here at some future time - or I could just be reading to much into it, wishful thinking UPDATE: This same coin is now on sale in china on ebay, just a different packaging - I like the chinese box, so much nicer than the PO version. 270844544398 [imgz=http://forums.silverstackers.com/uploads/2516_kgrhqmokowe54gbsmgboo33o1h460_3.jpg][/imgz]
thanks for posting, it looks pretty cool to me ... any details for purchasing online? (couldn't find on the Australia Post site)
oh, sorry ... should have been more specific ... was looking for the specimen colored (1/2 ounce from the Post Office) ... thanks though
They don't advertise this coin for some strange reason, not available on their website. If you really want one, PM me and we'll try sort something out, the PO had plenty in stock and I could post you one EDIT: Check out this ebay auction for the 1oz colourised version, MS70 slabbed 130593064121 Nearly $350 and still going! Might send a couple of these off for grading, got a few other coins to send so maybe worth a try
thanks, that would be great ... PM sent ----------- funny, that auction caught me eye as well ... and I was curious where they sourced the 1 oz non-proof coloured coin from (ie, a typeset, a single presentation (China), raw bullion, etc.) ... below is the response I received "Dear _____, This was a raw bullion coin released from the Perth Mint in very limited quantities. Thank you - moderncoinmart" ----- ... seems like the mint may have released some red 1 oz bullion coloured coins directly to dealers .
"No other coin sizes of the silver bullion coloured coins are available in Australia individually. The 1oz silver bullion coloured coin is available in a Typeset collection only. " Quoting the Perth Mint. So, will there be 1oz colored BU dragons this year and if so will it be 100% foreign allocation as per usual? How could the mint produce coloured BU lunars for the first 5 years in the 1oz and then stop? Seems a bit unclear here.
and another strangeness ... for the 1/2 oz specimen coloured from China, the COA's list a mintage of 50,000 just for them ... so 48,000 + 50,000 = 98,000 ... but if 50,000 go to china and 5,000 (max) go to the Post Office ... where do the other 43,000 go???
