I've been reading on this sporadically. So far, what I've read don't look good. It remains to be seen if this could be brushed off as they did with the swine flu epidemic (not same as swine fever) which had millions of fatalities but simply brushed off by WHO. If not, this could have economic impact on Asia especially.

Went to look for more surgical masks. 3 major pharmacies near my home all sold out. All bought up by PRCs. They know what we don’t know.

latest news. Look at the announcement, it’s not just a shutdown of public transport but a city level quarantine. I suppose this applies to all foreigners in the city.

Considering only 9 people have died in China with a population of close to 1.5 billion, doesn't seem that bad.

I'm sure the Chinese government have killed many more people in the same time frame. Heck more people would have died from almost anything else, alcohol,
food poisoning, car crashes, drugs, toxic chemicals, flu shots, smog, drone strikes, Foxconn & Apple factories etc...

Well, this isn't the point, the point is it can spread out of China. From what I've been reading, it's indistinguishable from common cold at the onset of infection, and more contagious than SARS. This is going to have an economic impact on tourism, etc.

My point was it's not even an issue in China, a country with a high population density, poor hygiene and a poor medical system. WHO and the media always over play these stories as if it's some zombie apocalypse.

If i wake up one morning and read a news headline saying 100,000 people have died in China due to this virus then ill start to worry.

No one yet has asked the question when and how this virus has been created?

The blue surgical masks might work and can be disposed of after every use. I'm not able to find any in the pharmacies near my place. I think they were all sold out yesterday. I went back home to check and found a box of 100 pieces which I bought a couple months ago when the forest fires started.

Influenza mutations like these are scary! Do not take them lightly... From my days working in a laboratory, you need to heed the warnings. They don't shut down a 11 million city for no reason.

It's not an avian originated flu virus. It's a animal or reptilian virus, supposedly originated from some snake or bat species.

Just read that some who died didn't have a fever. This is bad. Does this mean the human body can't even detect it as a virus?

Well this statement IS UTTER HYPE AND BULLSHIT.
Where can you show us that it is more contagious than SARS?
If you can not provide a definitive link for that MASSIVE LIE that you have typed here then everyone should simply block your messages as you are just trying to create drama with unfounded OPINION>
EDIT: The common cold and flu and measles and are all just as contagious as SARS .
SARS has a mortality rate of around 10% and killed 800 odd people TOTAL.
The FLU killed about 17000 in the USA just last year.

Well it was "created " in nature.
It was born out of our interaction with animals .
This is not some creation from a lab (most likely) this has come about because large numbers or humans congregate with wild animals and viruses LIKE US have a biological imperative to survive and sometimes they do that by jumping species.

I agree with the first part of you comment as any of these new zoonotic viruses could be the next big one to have a serious effect on the human species.
As for the second part of your comment regarding shutting down cities, if it was not China it may have more to it but after the SARS debacle i would imagine China wants to err on the side of caution so they do not suffer anymore criticism.
China was called out over their handling of SARS and i suspect the only reason they have shut down these cities is because they want to be seen as PROACTIVE members of the international community.
There is also the outside possibility that China has far far more deaths than they have let on and realize this is more serious than they have let on and are trying to cover their tracks.
If that was the case though id have thought someone would have blown the whistle on them with the social media connections we now have to share information anonymously.
