I have two 1938 Crowns that I need to move. Normally I flog these for $400 odd each at my market store. Happy to trade for $300 worth of RRP Perth Mint coins or $250 cash each. Free postage. I gave each a soapy water wash then patted them down and hit them with a blow dryer. Could not see signs of chemical cleaning. Just normal wear and tear as per pics.
forgive me Sammy, but what allows these seemingly regular crowns to command such a high premium @ 250 ea?
They are 1938, not common 1937. Mintage of 1937: 1 Million + coins. Mintage of 1938: Just over 100k coins. Most would have been melted down.
Because they have been touched by me! They were never a popular coin in 1937 because they were often confused with the florin. Thus in 1938 they only produced 100,000. Many were melted down in 1980 because of the Hunt Brothers, Mike and York, cornering the silver market and raising the price to $50 an ounce. Quite a sum 40 years ago. Most of the remaining 1938 Crowns are in “strong” hands, so not many around.
