The Mongolian Gulo Gulo 2007 won the COTY Award 2009 & The Best Silver Coin category.

Are the Ural Owl & The Hedgehog likely to do the same? What's your opinion?

Nah.. Imo it's all marketing ploy.
They've done enough with this series. They'll find other series to promote.
Sorry to sound so negative :/

Mmm .. Do you really feel so? To me, there are 3 criterias I look into when it comes to numismatic coins:

    1) the THEME must be right

    2) the DESIGN must be ingenious

    3) the MINTAGE must be low

Mongolian Wild Life Series are carrying the ENDANGRED WILDLIFE & WILDLIFE PROTECTION themes and these are evergreen topics. Won't it only get 'hotter' with time as more animals get noticed as being important due to threat of extinction?

I have come across many expensive coins but nothing comes close to the exquisite detailing of a FULL feature of subject matter, in this case being the GULO GULO, URAL OWL & HEDGEHOG alike. I find it amazing that they fit the whole hedgehog into the coin with lifelike expression? The designs of all three of the coins in these series are consistently mind-blowing in their detail. Isn't attention to detail an important feature of value?

As we have experienced in the last couple of months, the demand seems to be higher tHan the supply, with prices soaring overnight. I am not talking about listed prices only... The done transaction of usd1415 shot up to over usd2000 within a fortnight for the Gulo Gulo. The amazing looking Hedgehog has climbed from usd200 to usd550 in few weeks, before it's released! Are you somehow aware that there is a consortium perhaps behind these price increases and it's not free market valuation? Is that the marketing gimmick you are referring to?

    Thanks for the feedback!

Please don't get me wrong. I like the coins too and I agree with the quality. The price is whatever people willing to fork out.
I'm just saying that these award thing are usually just marketing exercises, whoever pays the most, wins. (Pls just ignore me :p)

    Plane and simple..............

These are one of the most beautiful, artistic, and museum pieces ever to be made.....The Swarovski elements are stunning and made very well...Look up ( Swarovski Elements ).
They are worth what people are willing to pay for them. It's like anything else in life.
Like the excellent quarterback deserves more money than the lousy one.
filet mignon deserves to cost more than chopped steak.
Say whatever you want... these coins are one of the best ever, And Mongolia needs to be congratulated...
I love them, And to me, PRICELESS GEMS. I would not trade one wolverine for 2 (1) ounce gold proof buffaloes..

Actually, I agree with you Spanner.
I am not particularly into numis, but could see what was happening to the prices of this series earlier this year.
My holdings in these coins are a relatively small part of my stack, so to me, it was worth the punt to jump on board.
So far, this decision has paid quite handsomely. :D

I would.... Everything in life can be bought for the right price. ;)

These modern coins are NOT numis, they are collectible pieces of art
Modern coins that are made to be collectible
    ARE NOT
Pandas & Dragons on the other hand are modern numis
They never started that way ,but ended up being collectible numis
How would you be if you paid $7k for the Tiffany Art coin a few years ago & had to sell it today ?

OK, I stand corrected, and appreciate you pointing out the difference between numis and art.
Either way, my interest in both art and numis extends no further than minor curiosity.
To me, this is a priceless work of art and museum piece....

But I still don't want it hanging on my wall. I would however love to sell it!

If, however Da Vinci used a bit of artistic licence, then maybe I would want this on my wall - but I would still sell it for the right price:

I have no idea. I'm guessing this would have resulted in a loss. If so, I would have felt it serves myself right for punting $7k. :|

Look back the history of COTY, China Panda coin won gold coin category COTY in year 1985 and 2003. China Panda coin (different design from gold coin) also won silver coin category COTY in 1985. They are all from same theme.

I bought 6 pieces of the Hedgehog at usd200 each and another 5 pieces at usd500 each. Will be keeping all 11 for a long, long time... Of course unless the price is irresistible ... :D
