    Hi all,

Picked up the ox below and has different years on both sides, 2009 on the front, 2007 on the back?

    It's a series one coin that's why.

So all series 1 coins have 2 different dates? I've never realised that, I've only got 1/2 oz series 1 lunars and they don't have dates on the back!

No. The Silver mouse (rat), the Tiger and the Ox were struck in 2007 so it's 2007 at the back but the years in front are the actual "lunar" years.

The silver series 1 started in 1999 with the rabbit, the rat, tiger & ox were not minted in 1996-1998.

The gold series was though so there's no double date for the Gold.

    That's a Series 1 coin.

Series 1 lunar silver set started from the #4 animal of the lunar series. So instead of commencing the from 1996 during the year of the mouse, the first coin in the series was the 1999 year of the rabbit, thus bypassing the mouse, ox and tiger.

By the end of the lunar cycle in 2007, they retrospectively released the missing three animals during the same year (I.e 2007), but dated the animals according to the lunar years (2008 mouse, 2009 ox and 2010 tiger).

For the ox coin, That's why the obverse was dated 2007 and the reverse dated 2009.

Note also that series 2 was starting correctly during the 2008 year of the mouse, which gives us three overlapping year coins between series 1 and 2.

    My 2 cents,

    Hi Folks,
Yes I still find it all a strange affair, and defying any logic.
If the Mint were trying to match up the sets, and if were going to double-date the
Series one coins, logic for me would have said you would date them on the front
    1996-1997-1998 (mouse-ox-tiger)
Am I being pedantic, or is what I am saying illogical.
As it stands it's another example of another Mint "Faux Pas" for me.
    Cheers
    Aum.

may be that is the reason I do not buy lunar coins, if they do not start with the rats/mice I skip them :(

in Singapore they mint will start with a rooster/chicken. I skip them also :(

I collect the series that start with a rat, fortunate enough there are some for me.

They got it right with the gold, that's why I started into the Lunar 1/4's (1996)
At the time, they were slow kicking off with the silver, but could have fixed it in 2007
    (as mentioned)
Perth Mint were trying to bring in the Asian Market, and had a good variety of
styles, a hindu set, and even King Rama V for the Thai's (as they set up in BKK)
... it helped for trading in Asia, at the time. ;)
All the best to you in Singapore :)
    Cheers

    oh no ... it's a fake ... j/k ... keke ...

Hmm why should lunar start with rat? The Chinese Fan-Shaped Lunar started in 2000 and completed last year to form a complete circle. Silver forming outer circle, gold, the inner circle. Quite a masterpiece if I could frame it up on the wall ...

in the Chinese zodiac, Rat won the race and be the first in that order ... last one was a pig.

its like a day start after the sun-set, then you know the saying at the end of the day, the time before the sun set.
then after the end of the day, then another day begins.... this is the time when the rat comes out, at beginning of the day....then morning when the rooster kokkk kekee, follow by the pig go back to sleep, end of the day.

the day cycle has be counted that way for so long, until AM and PM came along, and confused every body. then the confusion push to the weekly cycle, may caused the seasons to change and annual cycle is being confused again with people buying coins.

I think everyday starts with the rat coming out of the rat hole after the sun set. :p

That's an insight to how a lunar collector's mind think.
