After my recent buying spree, I have convinced my brother to buy some gold. After I bought myself some Maples, I found a place where I can buy Roos, Pandas and Philharmonics, at a bit of premium over the maples but it's nice to have variety. My brother doesn't know much about where to buy etc so I'll be doing this for him in the next few weeks. So the question is which would you buy and why? All three have the same price. a. Australian 1 oz. Roo b. Austria 1oz. Philharmonic c. China 1 oz. Panda d. Buy one from the below. The store also sells Krugerrands, Mexico 50 pesso, and Sovereigns.
If your brother is conservative, and a new stacker, I would suggest he dabble initially in maples for the liquidity in Canada and lower premium. Once he gets comfortable with the idea of holding gold, then he can branch out into other country's coins if he so chooses.
I agree. Give me a six foot bamboo pole and I still wouldn't poke a panda.
The only way I'll ever own a panda is if someone gives it to me for free
Panda poop or the Australian cross breed the panda nugget
Go maple or panda the markup on the gold panda 1 oz is a lot more reasonable percentage wise than the 1 oz. silver. Better yet, buy a panda with his $ and swap for one of your maples. Make up the difference with cash or silver. You get variety, he gets bullion. If I had the money I'd probab ly buy the 50 peso just because its my favorite coin out there. Just curious is it bordergold? I know theuy have pandas and 50 pesos.
Sargeant Argent, we think alike. I was thinking of swapping my maple with his panda (if i went that route and of course pay him the premium) and yes it's border gold. BTW, any plans for a trip to civilization in the near future?
I don't know if they ship to Australia, they do ship to the mighty US of A. http://bordergold.com/product_rates.php
Hey Diablo not sure when I'll be in Vancouver next maybe in the fall. Went to Nanaimo a week ago bought some stuff for my house 7 oz of rounds and junk silver and 2 gold ducats, I'm still pretty stoked on that trip. I'll probably visit the city when I get the HST return for building my house, its a huge chunk of change and about 5 - 7 grand are alloted for bullion. Also going to the Philippines this winter on vacation so I should be coming through Vancouver then too. Want to buy some gold while in Manilla maybe just a little coin so I can say I bought this one while touring asia!
Hi D. Clearly the best answer to this is c) China 1oz Panda. Contemplate the following. If you buy a Roo or Philharmonic, you can only expect to gain when spot gold goes higher, and your profit is determined by high spot goes. BUT if you get a Panda, you will not only win when spot goes higher, but as time goes on, the Panda becomes more rare, and the worth becomes greater. 2011 Pandas and 2011 Roos are almost the same price price, with a difference of maybe 5%. The Roo and Philharmonic is unlikely to ever have much additional worth to spot, whereas we know for a fact that Pandas do. But an even better answer to your question would be to buy 4x 1/4oz 2011 Pandas. If/when spot goes crazy high, I think 1/4oz gold coins will be easier to liquidate than 1oz coins. Also, for the moment, 1/4oz 2011 Pandas are much cheaper than 1/4oz Roos! At KJC, 1/4oz Roos go for $460each and at ABC Bullion they are $499each, but at the Panda Forum Group Buy, they are only $427each. Not only do you get 1/4oz of gold cheaper than a Roo, you also get a much more rare coin too. http://forums.silverstackers.com/to...da-2011-gold-value-pack-fractionals-open.html Definitely the right answer is to go with the Pandas. Thanks Yennus. I'm located in Canada so I'm not familiar with the stores you mentioned and I don't think I would qualify for the group buy (even if I did, then there's shipping/insurance etc). My local store has them (at least that's what their website says) and the pandas/roos/philharmonics are all price the same. 2.9% premium over maples but I'm not worried about the premiums because as someone else said in another thread, when you sell them, you also sell with that premium. Our local store doesn't carry any 1/4's so that's why I wanted to know about the 1 oz and I don't really want to deal with ebay. But I do agree, the 1/4 would be much easier to sell.
Yeah I know what you mean diablo its hard to find gold fractionals other than the maple.I've been on the look out for a 1/4 oz. AGE not an easy find unless you order from the US and I believe they aren't .999 so they'd be subject to GST in Canada.
If you find some online let me know and I can order them for you, my sister and her family lives in Seattle and they visit us once a month. No need to pay duties etc
That would be cool, maybe later on the year we can orchestrate a trade or something when I know I'll be in the city.
