Kind of a no brainer for me. Between those two choices, I would buy the gold coin. The gold coin has a much more interesting design. But I am not a numismatic coin person and I wouldn't buy either coin.
I pick the gold. The 5 Sovereign coin is among my favorites. Also, from the premium over spot point of view, the gold premium is a lot lower per troz than the silver (based on the prices listed). Here's a nudge to convince you...
Im with dccpa in that id buy neither.. zero chance. But id definitely get the Sov --- dont like how its 2009 when you could get 1909 sovs x5 for in aUNC for less (mmmms divisible antique numismatic grishams bullion numismatica) 1for1
I'll go for the gold if I have to choose one of them. You breakeven when spot gold doubles, premiums for silver is way too high.
Luker, let us know which way you go (either of the choices you listed or some other choice you decide on).
If I was forced to choose between the two, I would go for the 5 gold sovereign. But not sure why you're paying so much for it cos I thought apmex was selling them for around 1700USD?
If i am in Canada, I will get a canadian gold coin. If i am in UK, i will get a UK gold coin. I personally wont spend that kind of monies for silver coin. But again...each to its own. My 2c
Mintage is lower for 2006-2008 according to http://taxfreegold.co.uk/wesellfivepounds.html (See the entries for "Fourth Portrait - St. George" - B.U.) Of course there are proof versions for each year too: http://taxfreegold.co.uk/quintuplesovereigns.html Compare the issue prices 1992 Gold 5: 1138 CAD, premium over spot: 665 CAD 2013 Maple: 2300 CAD, premium over spot: 1600 CAD Now you can buy for a premium of 1000 CAD for the gold, or 2240 CAD for the silver. But if you buy the gold coin in the US, the premium is only about 665 CAD, same as in 1992! For those prices, why not buy some platinum polar bear coins or something...
I like the Gold...silver maples enjoy your milk down the line when it goes sour in the back seat of a hot minivan
Actually I went with neither. I used the funds to buy a bunch of numismatic items and some blobs: two 5oz silver proof 2014 piedfort Tuvalu Bald Eagles (mintage 1500), three 1oz silver proof 2014 Mongolian Chinngas Khaan (two "coloured", one regular) coins (mintage of 1000 for each type ) ten 1oz silver proof SBSS products (mintages of 2500 to 3500?) -will likely receive next week and post photos one 1 oz silver proof 2014 NEW ZEALAND-NIUE Black Rhinocerous (mintage 2000)-arriving soon five 10oz 2014 RCM silver bars Cheers, Luker
