Sir Fred Hoyle was one of the most prominent astrophysicists that set the stage for the idea of black holes and ironically withdrew his support for the "big bang theory" that he came up with ... RIP Mr Hoyle ... and thank you for your brilliance ...

People can't be told, they have to see it for theirself. Most people don't have the ability to think and see things how they really are, so they just accept the current teaching. The current models fail to explain too many things, yet for some reason most people cling to those ideas. I guess if the physics and more so astronomy field told the truth that their models are broken then they would struggle even more to get funding.
Science is always playing catch up to the researchers, if it does't fit the current model, you may be ostracized and lose your funding, credibility, your position, everything. It is a big motivation to be super cautious about what you publish.
