Partner asked what I wanted for a birthday present. Initially I said a ring, but having found this forum a week ago and discovering that last year's silver purchases were up a significant amount I decided on silver, since then (last week) I've um.. made a few purchases of silver.

What's a nice gold coin I could ask for - would have to be less than an ounce?

A Perth Mint Lunar coin depicting the year of your birth.

Eg if born in 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 you're born in the Year of the Rabbit. Google the year you were born and then see if she/he can buy a fractional gold coin of that year.

    Now you are talking,

Since you said a ring, i will assume you are female.

Depending where you are from, id go for a gold coin and the gold bezel to house the coin
so that you can also wear it as jewellery.

Check out this guy on eBay - he is the most professional bezel seller i have seen.

Let us know what country you are from and we can suggest gold coins.

Just go for the cheapest version - no need to pay an additional $200 just because
the coin was minted in Birmingham in 1911

    Full Sovereign

    http://coins.shop.ebay.com.au/i.htm...16&_trksid=m194&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSRCHX:SRCH

    Half Sovereign

    http://coins.shop.ebay.com.au/i.htm...16&_trksid=m194&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSRCHX:SRCH

    4 Ducats - ( Austria-Hungarian Empire ) 0.44 oz of gold - a continental beaut ;)

    http://shop.ebay.com.au/i.html?_nkw...=0&_trksid=m194&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSRCHX:SRCH

1 Ducat - same as above but 4 times less silver content

    http://shop.ebay.com.au/i.html?_nkw...50&_trksid=m194&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSRCHX:SRCH

    1 Ducat - from Holland

Good luck and get the bezel, so that you can wear it around the neck and at least
be getting a 'dividend' from your gold coin.

    ;)

This is a PROOF coin and as a beginner you wont need it.
and for that amount of money you could buy 11 of them ( un-PROOF version )
    unproof :)

I'm liking the sovereigns and the ducats. Don't think the ox is for me - the design is not that appealing.

And thanks for the link to the SS coin list - didn't know that was here.

I have wdavis.com bookmarked so will check with them.

    Thanks for all these suggestions.

Sovereign. So much history in each coin.

I'm the easiest person to buy for gift wise in my family.

'Just get him some silver or gold, anything will do, he's not fussy'

How much more simple could you possibly want it?

If your family and friends know this is the 'ideal' gift for you, it's a no brainer. You don't have to worry about doubling up, you don't have to worry about mixing and matching or whether he/she will 'like' it or not.

If it's made of silver or gold, I'm happy.

I wish buying gifts for other people was so simple! :)

I've done a bit of research regarding the birthday present he is going to pay for. I would like to have a pendant that contains a half sovereign with veiled head, a solid opal - cos I love opals and a piece of silver. All to be contained in silver and on a silver chain. This way I will get an all in one.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a silversmith to put this together for me? I actually don't have the sov, the opal or the silver at this stage. Would be interested in talking to a silversmith to do the work before each part is purchased.

Will post in the Au/Nz thread when required.

    Hi all,

I recently bought a PAMP 5 gram Lady Fortuna gold oval pendant for my wife's birthday present and she refuses to wear it! Says she doesn't like the design. I won't repeat her comments as they may paint her as racist - which she most assuredly is not. I think it's a fantastic looking necklace but I'm not a woman after all. I even had the thing fitted with a really nice 18 karat gold chain from ABC bullion. I'm now holding it 'til gold goes to $1,800 to sell so I can at least break even!! If anyone is interested I'm happy to sell now it and take a small loss. I can of course provide all receipts and docs and the PAMP assay certificate. It is, of course, in showroom condition and hasn't spent any time out of it's box. Ho hum, such is life!! Any necklace buyers out there?

    Cheers, P50
