Would you purchase 1966 50 cent pieces or bars of silver if both are selling at spot or just above ? I am looking at buying 30oz in total I am in a dilemma as both are worthy additions, but I am trying to decide which if either have better potential for resale. Thoughts ? Graeme
How big are the bars you are looking at? If you can get 50c and say 10 oz bars at the same price oz for oz, buy the 50c coins. They are recongnised aussie wide really well and its easy to know that 3 50c coins = 1oz. Simple math and easy to divvy out when you need to cash in many years down the track.... Did that help?
The 1966s can be split up and sold in many ways, which can be handy. They can also be stored flat, which can also be very handy. Either is good though.
I am looking at a 10oz and a 20oz bar Perth Mint bars ... called them and they have stock. I am leaning towards the coins .... I really like them and think longer term they could appeal more to both stackers, numis and average citizens on the street. Selling here is like throwing chips to seagulls if the price is right ... no offence intended.
I doubt that you would have trouble offloading either so it depends on what you want. If you are keen on the coins then i'd go with Thucy's suggestion of getting both.
1966s and 10oz bars are extremely popular. You'd have no problems offloading them here, I assure you.
I have just ordered some more 50 cent pieces at a damn good price. Let's see if my supplier has a fit as his price is under spot at present but not by much. Order confirmed that he will sell to me if he has them .... and then he put the price up by $2 a coin.
Well there's 30x 50c pieces to 10oz (close enough for comparison). Looking at W Davis as a comparison, the spread on 1966 50c is ~$4/oz, and the spread on a 10oz bar is ~$2/oz. Buyback on the 1966 50c is higher per oz than the 10oz bar. For personal preference, I'd go the 10oz bars, but if you can get the 50c at the same price, they're a better proposition financially.
