What is "COLLAPSE"? Now really, seriously, what exactly is it?

Can't count the times I've heard "Venezuela is on the brink of economic collapse".
The media just keeps pumping it...

Well, if what's going on there ain't "COLLAPSE", then I don't know what is! o_O

So, what is "COLLAPSE"? We're talking about economic-financial (not moral, social, bla bla bla...).

    Hyperinflation? Venezuela: qualifies
Drastic basic items' price increase? Venezuela: qualifies
Famine due to food production issues, extreme spread of poverty? Venezuela: qualifies
Sustained economic crisis/massive recession? Venezuela: qualifies
    Long-term unemployment downtrend? Venezuela: qualifies
Long-term average income decrease? Venezuela: qualifies
Wide-spread riots, theft, vandalism due to extreme poverty? Venezuela: qualifies
Sustained major humanitarian/health crisis as a result of major economic crisis? Venezuela: qualifies
Country's long-term economic power decrease (e.g. GDP/GDP per capita/exports decrease etc.)? Venezuela: qualifies
    Industrial production decrease? Venezuela: qualifies
Less foreign tourists visit the country? Venezuela: qualifies

I say they collapsed already like 5 years ago

Just take a look at their GDP. Truly tragic. But: nice increase there between 2014-2015.

And yes, there's a loooong way down:
GDP in 2019: 76 billion USD nominal (estimated) is going to decrease -25 % this yearGDP in 2019: 76 billion USD nominal (estimated) is going to decrease -25 % this year.

One thing I can't comprehend: how come the population is still growing?

Economic, industrial, social, infrastructure and quality of life all collapse once socialism is imposed on any population. Venezuela is a living example of what happened every time that it was attempted. All thats left of the cycle for Venezuela is the last phase - the bloodbath.

I agree, the collapse began many years ago, once socialism is imposed genuine investment grinds to a halt as the brightest and most motivated individuals and companies either leave the country or join the ruling class in order to be on top as the economy fails.

I would take everything the IMF releases about Venezuela with a grain of salt.

You have a point, the IMF is hardly a paragon of virtue and real data would be almost impossible to collect even if they were trying to be honest. Things might not be as bad as they say and things could possibly be much worse.

    In Venezula,

If you're a poor peasant family, who was given land to farm, free education for children, food rations and a pension than life is better than before! Viva Modura, long live Modura
If you're a middle class and now need to line up for 12 hours for toilet paper! Down with the Dictator!
If you're rich, it is an opportunity to buy up excellent cheap assets and your servants line up to get food. Life is full of opportunities

    In Zimbawee
If you're a poor black family, who was given land to farm, free education for children, food rations and a pension than life is better than before! Viva Mugabbe!
If you're a white and was forced off the land! Down with the Dictator!
If you're rich, it is an opportunity to buy up excellent cheap assets and your servants line up to get food. Life is full of opportunities

So, back to the original subject: has Venezuela collapsed or not?

The media keeps making affirmations like "near collapse" or "about to collapse", but I think it has already collapsed 5-6 years ago.

Very sad. I'm terribly sorry for the people.

Quote - one thing I can't comprehend: how come that population is still growing - it is the only form of entertainment that they can still afford silly :D

The Book of Genesis Chapter 1 verse 28

Then God blessed them, and God said to them,Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it,have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air,and over every living thing that moves on the face of the earth :)

Socialism destroys everything it touches but also domesticates the people like cattle. Same as in America.
Once they realize they are screwed they have no idea what to do since the nanny state has always been there.
To the sheeples collective mindsets they are doing a service to their country by bending over and taking more.

Venezuela has been down the drain for years.

Yet, people still keep returning to the same-old socio-communist lifestyle through different variations of the same ideology/mindset.
Many Americans and Europeans are doing the same thing.

What’s socialism got to do with it. It is a dictatorship. Plus the economy has a small problem due to foreign influences.

And then we have corruption within the dictatorship. Excellent combo ready to drive any economy to its knees.

Again sadly the general population suffer the consequences.

Here in America its constantly pounded into your head that the free markets are evil and only constant government intervention keeps things afloat and fair.
Most people have no idea what true capitalism is or the differences between other systems and being the uneducated sheep that they are, believe the pollies out of fear and faith.
When the pollies start talking socialism and how great it is, the sheeple line right up for their take.

There's a terrible load of disinformation and "quotes upon quotes", as it usually happens. 0.01 % of journalists really know what's going on, the rest just lie
or quote the quotes ordered by politicians.

Dictatorship feeds on corruption and corruption breeds dictatorship.

I think socialism has tremendous "success" in Latin American countries due to the fact that they don't have national identities in Europe and pretty much all of the countries are Spanish (or Portuguese) speakers.

The right-wing has a strong basis in Europe (ancient history, so many nations, religions, languages and frictions etc.). Whereas, in Latin America it's easier to mislead
the masses through socialism, promoting it as a "solution" for poverty, famine, corruption, crime...

What's the ugliest of all things is that almost no-one ever sends any help to Venezuela. Medicine, food items, even funds. The US could simply print 5 billion dollars and
just "give it away" for humanitarian purposes. Or, use it to send equal-value food rations to Venezuelans. Even if they did this once a year, it would be a pragmatical,
VERY NICE gesture and could help the US economy as well (provided that they'd buy the food made in the US by US producers and would ship it to Venezuela).

It's sad, but no-one cares about Venezuela.

It's crazy that those people havent revolted yet. Looks like they are completely helpless on their own.

I think the fact that people haven’t revolted is something to be aware of. People take a long time to be so uncomfortable with their situation that they will rise up.
I would suggest many people would die before they revolt. Many societies have lost that collective independent thinking. They are so expectant that the government will be the parent and look after them and save them. Even after many many disasters where governments have shown themselves to be incompetent.
Change maybe coming but it may take a lot longer than anyone could imagine.
