Of course it's bloody wrong to bribe government officials. But it does show one of the not so obvious ways that the bribery and corruption can be enacted.

So is it morally wrong for a government to bribe the electorate?

It's really not worth getting into a debate about this with you. It is fraudulent, it is theft, it is immoral and it is illegal in any legal system worth talking about because of all those things. If an employee stole from you, you would no doubt think it was wrong. Bribery and corruption are exactly the same things. It is very, very simple.

Shiney - if you want to be hardline about it, the very existence of a coercive government is also wrong but that is a much bigger paradigm shift than the simple corruption talked about here (but I'm assuming you're already aware of this and just being a stirrer).

Actually not being a stirrer, bordsilver, your post prompted me to think that as citizens we can't sweeten any deals with gov officials or pollies in order to get an outcome that benefits us or improves our position, yet politicians are guilty of doing this very same thing with other people's money on a regular basis. :)

Bribery is theft ? huh ? r u sure ? Why is it called bribery & not theft ?

Theft is deliberately TAKING something thats not yours ?
Bribery is GIVING someone something in return for a favour

    Hope that helps :)

Yes, and this why everyone yells "hypocracy" and "bulldust" when they hear many pollies. It's because of such double standards that most people react this way naturally even if they haven't thought very hard about it all.

Taking bribes is theft from your employer, or in the case of govt corruption, theft from the people the Government is "supposed" to be helping.

    Of course they do.

And because I'm a cynical bastard, I would also say that the majority of "big" decisions passed by governments are bribes.
