So a friend so a couple of the Crowns I had, and showed me some Dollars he bought from an Afghan Market for around $5 each a couple years ago. Other than weighing them, is there another way of checking the Authenticity? Things I should look for?

Earliest is Labelled 1796 newest looks like 1894.

Is it worth trying the Bi-Carb cleaning method?

    Cheers

I got stung a few years ago buying similar coins in Chang Mai
I would put money on it being a fake.
Probably a cupro-nickel fake so a magnet will be useless to test for authenticity.

Weigh them - that will be the giveaway. Then compare the thickness (assuming they're the correct diameter) - if it's within 0.2mm or so it would be fairly safe to assume they may be legitimate if the weight is correct.

My bet is though that they will be ~25% underweight.

Father-in-law pulled out a silver stash today - I took the opportunity to weigh a "disc" worn Morgan and an UNC Morgan that were in the pile. There was only 1gm difference between them - roughly 25.6gm vs 26.7gm - so the loss of 1.1g out of 26.7g is only a 4% weight loss - and that was a flat disklike coin with extreme wear. Anything more than 4% weightloss IMO is a sign of fakery.

If those are real they are extremely valuable. I have rarely seen US Dollars of those dates even to be readable. Coins of that era were not hoarded as keepsakes and collected as they are today, they were used as currency and heavily circulated...hence, it is extremely rare to find those coins in "crisp" shape....and you have 7 of them!!

Also, the toning does not seem right, they look moldy and splotchy in your photos, they should be toned deep black by now...at least in the crevices.

Stay away from buying any early US dollars unless you can inspect and analyze them first, they are all being faked heavily by the Chinese and dumped on Ebay etc....even coin shops have these fakes for sale.

I might take you up on that offer, but I'm in no rush, and I will be back in Sydney in may, so I'll have another beer with you and you can give me another fakey.

Oh I forgot to say thanks for the one you left in my last package. So a big thanks for the one troy ounce trade unit.

Edit: I should add it was labelled fake and a suprise addition. In case anyone was thinking steve sold it to me.

Take one into the Perth Mint next time you're in ... Try and sell it to them. You'll know pretty quick if its not Silver.

The forgers used the same planchet for the fake Morgan dollars as well as the fake Silver Trading unit.
If your friends coin weights about the same; it will be a fake for sure. The fake I sent you only weights approx 21grams
Be great to catch up with you at one of our Wednesday's meet.
    Cheers

The weight will be your best tell if fake. They can NEVER fake the weight unless they make the coin a different size. :)

From the little I know plus the referencing material (2011 US Official Red Book) I think the 1843 etc... Look to be the right design, however the 1796 one pictured is in fact a Trade Dollar and that design did not start until 1873 ?

The reverse of the 1843 ? Should have an Eagle and with the words - ONE DOL. (Yes not Dollar)

Again weight is the first check. Should be 26.73g and Dia - 38.1mm

The Trade Dollar should be 27.22g and 38.1mm Diameter.

    Hope that helps some.

Great point! I have a trade dollar that has a missed spelled word... the E is a F? or looks like an F.

Steve I have to ask, what is the difference between a genuine fake and a fake fake? :)

Spclst69 is not sure whether his friend's coin is fake or genuine.
There's no ambiguity about the coin I sent him; it is a genuine fake. 100% guarantee :)

    Ah ha ha,

The 1843 has an eagle and one dol on it. Will get a set of scales and weigh them. I dare say they are all fake. But hey I might get a surprise.

Actually might try and find a gold buyers Australia and put their scales to good use.
