I found this in my change a few months back and am interested if anyone has seen this before. The coin has an internal ring on both sides and it doesn't appear to be just a stain or mark. I can't feel any discernable 'dip' when I run my finger over it and the marks won't come off with a rub. My theory is that it has been caught in a vending machine or similar. What's funny, though is that the ring on the reverse seems to go under the large roo's ear, rather than over it. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.
I had the same thing but I didn't think mine was a real double rim. So I did the unthinkable and cleaned it. The rims on both sides cleaned right off
Nothing special. Not even a mules. Below is $1 Mob of roo mules coins; this what you should look for double rims.
Thank you all for the feedback, and thank you for posting the photo of the double-rimmed coins. I'll keep my unusual specimen in the tin as a curiosity. And if I find a double-rimmed one I'll post a photo. Cheers!
There is a $1 years 2000 mob of roos mules posts somewhere in numis. For your information it is worth from a few hundred at least.
I found a 1985 coin almost identical to the original post today. The rim appears below the coin design. There may be something to this.
There's a lot of theories about those lines around dollar coins. The most common one is that it's rolling machines doing it. But IMHO it's just people doing it with pencils.
It sure looks like pencil. But how it manages to give the illusion at least of going beneath the detail is pretty cool. Going to try and replicate it on a different coin. But unusual it was the exact same year. I've found other 85 coins online as well.
Just talking with my partner (who is the queen of dollar coins) and she says it's most common 1984's and 1985's. They have higher rims than other years, wonder if it has anything to do with that.
