The most expensive stamp ever auctioned Netherlands

    208,000.00

The most expensive stamp ever in the Netherlands, October 31, 2013 auction at the NPT in Weesp. It is a stamp from Kenya-Uganda from 1925 with a nominal value of 100, reported the Dutch Stamp and Coin Auction Thursday.
The catalog value of the stamp is around 120,000 euros. There are just a few of printed and only four uncancelled and gift specimens in museums and private collections known.

100 pounds in 1925, what was that for? Posting an elephant?

Meh! I am a paid up member of the 'Paper is Paper' club, a bit like the 'Silver is silver' club but we really hate premiums.

Close - high-value stamps like this were apparently used to indicate fees had been paid for big game hunting licenses: http://www.postalmuseum.si.edu/queen's/rarities.html
