As most people noticed, recently the Silver Stackers website was temporarily suspended by the web host. This was caused in part by the forum basically outgrowing the current hosting arrangements. Plans are already underway to migrate the forum to a new platform, but this needs to happen sooner than later. Part of this will be any private messages older than 30 days being purged from Silver Stackers. There are close to 200,000 private messages in the database - more than the number of posts on the forum. Removing these messages has a two-fold effect: 1. Makes the database smaller, helping the performance and ease of migrating the website 2. Protects your privacy - how many banking details are scattered throughout private messages etc? However if you want to KEEP any private messages older than 30 days, this is how you can retain them. 1. Click on the Messages tab 2. Scroll to the bottom of the page - there is a Manage folders link in the footer on the left 3. Add a new folder. This can be called anything - "Archive" for example. You can create up to 10 folders. 4. Go back to the main Inbox view 5. Scroll to the bottom of the page - there should now be a Move multiple messages link in the footer on the left (ONLY visible after you create a folder) 6. Select the checkboxes next to the messages you want to keep, and click the Move button 7. A new page appears - select the folder you want to move the messages to, and click the Move button again Do this for as many messages you would like to keep. Keep these instructions open in a separate window the first time you try this. Messages older than 30 days in your main inbox will be deleted on 22nd October 2011. Messages NOT moved to an archive folder will be PERMANENTLY LOST if you do not follow the above steps
You will need to cut & paste any sent messages you want to keep and resend them to yourself - a sent message cannot be moved to a folder, but you can message yourself. Sent messages will get purged after 30 days too. We did this last year as well - see http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-4246-the-great-private-message-purge.html
Hi Ben, Done. A feature that might help reduce the number of stored messages is the ability to either email a copy of message/s to yourself, and/or to save your private messages to a CSV file. Then we could keep a copy of messages as required and completely remove messages from the server. Food for thought anyway
GP is there anyway to save the SENT private messages to an archive. I managed to save the the INBOX messages, however cannot seem to save the SENT ones.
GP.. I have been having a lot of trouble accessing SS.This is the first time I have been able to do so but then through the back door. Any tips would be appreciated. Please remember that I'm no IT expert. Regards Errol 43
