First post in a while I've recently become a resident of our nation's fair capital and finally got around to checking out the LCS......... Maybe I'm just used to the premiums on GP's site, but I was a little bit shocked at their premiums - gold at 9%, silver 50%, and round fiddies close to 100%!! I'm not awfully interested in the numis and commemorative coins from the RAM (just want the metal), and as far as I know there are no other dealers in Canberra. Does anybody know of a better option in the ACT region, or am I stuck with giving my buzz finger a workout in the sale threads? Cheers in advance, Yeti.
G'day Yeti, Your reading is spot -on. I'm in Belconnen. That shop in the centre of town is the only LCS I know of and I don't know how they've survived with the ridiculous mark-ups. Was there anything in particular that you wanted right now?
How do they survive? Easy....maybe they are like the 2nd hand bookshop in our town that sells chop chop tobacco already rolled. Busiest shop in town. I don't think they sell many books though.
That 'shop' you are likely referring to, sells a lot of stuff on ebay. I think they also run their own auctions as well ...
And also Sydney isn't too far away if you want to visit one of the bullion dealers here, or maybe visit one weekend and come to the monthly Sydney meet up. Are there ever any meets in Canberra?
I know this to be true I was hoping there might be another place I could regularly swing by to grab a sneaky ounce every now and then, perhaps have a browse of pretty items also. No matter, I'll just sign up for a PO box and hit the trading threads instead!
Canberra sucks for buying PMs. RAM is interesting to visit, but premiums on the merch are fanciful. There is pretty much a single shop close to the centre of the cbd afaik. I visited it quite a few years ago now & walked out without anything if that helps. Sydney is definitely a better option. There are lots of old towns in a 100k radius around Canberra and deceased estates/advertising in the little towns on bulletin boards would be something I'd be looking into if in the area and taking the initiative. There are loads of older folks who don't use much internet and you never know your luck. It is easier to buy here. If just buying investment bars, better to set up an account with a major and the nearest and imo the benchmark against your options (including SS) is ABC Sydney.
Funny you mention that; the anniversary of his death was on February 14th. He was killed in 1779 on Hawaii after a series of violent misunderstandings. http://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/james-cook-hawaii.html
The main reason to go to Edlins is because you can also get weird or interesting stuff. Buy generic stuff when you're interstate.
I've recently moved away from Canberra, but have done a fair amount of shopping at Edlins. Yes, their store prices are high, but check out their auctions. I've gotten some pretty decent deals on silver and gold at the auctions (occasionally, significantly below spot) and occasionally they'll have platinum and palladium as well. Their next auction is March 18th, so presumably the lots will be available for inspection next week. Now that I'm not going to their auctions anymore (having moved overseas), I can give you the hint of looking through their foreign silver and gold coins up for auction. Interest in these coins is often light and in an attempt to simply get them sold the reserve prices will often drop to fairly low levels. The other good part of the auction to look for deals is among the box lots/aggregations (listed near the front of the catalog). They occasionally make mistakes/miss things in those lots in the description and if you take the time to inspect the lots beforehand, you may find that a particular lot is a significantly better than it initially looks like. I'm not particularly familiar with the gold sovereigns, but you may be able to snag some deals on them as well.
Hi, Also in Canberry... Do the majority of my large bar purchases in Sydney but have gotten to know a couple of local Ebay dealers that are happy to give me a discount for cash on the barrel purchases of rounds, 10oz bars etc. No Ebay or Paypal fees for either party either. YMMV Cheers and welcome!
