So I have the silver bug bad and go looking around locally for silver coins, not many places at all where I live but I did come across one place referenced on the net, a Pawn broker and scrap gold buyer, MMMM I think to myself, probably gonna get raped if I go in there , not knowing anything except for the prices payed on Ebay .

But I go in anyway and ask the guy if he has any pure silver coins for sale,"Yeah I have some" he say's , and show's me a 2003 Kangaroo for $35 dollars mmm I think OK cheaper than ebay at least and ask if he has Eftpos, Nope cash only mate he reply's, OK Ill just go get some cash and walk out the door.

A couple of hr's later after following the Missus around shoping I get back there with my $35.00 in hand and on the way in notice a display case with some other stuff in , a few boxed coins amongst them, The Redback 2006 $1.00 and the Shark plus a few more.

The guy hands over the Roo and I hand over the $35.00, and I ask him whats the go with these ones over here, "Oh yeah they are coins as well", "Oh can I have a look at the spider one" I ask thinking to myself it will be the only time I ever get to hold one . "Yeah sure" he says, "It's a nice looking Coin".

So I wander over with him and he pulls it out " It's not an Aussie coin tho" he says "it's from some Island place Tooravaloo or something like that" "mm nice" I say "How much are you asking for that " ? "Oooor" he says looking at it and then at me "I reckon you could have that for $50.00" he say's "whadaya reckon" ?

Well time sort of slowed down a bit, I checked it over, read the COA, looked at the box, "MMM Yeah OK m8 leave him out , Ill just go see if SWMBO will let me spend that much on a coin".

Out I go to the car to confront the Missus, "Give me fifty bucks NOW" I tell her, "OH what the F/ING hell are you buying now she moaned", "Dont worry about it just give me the money" Blah blah back and forth............The rest is a bit of a blur but I got the cash and wandered back in trying to keep calm.

The guy then spent five minutes explaining to me that he needed to work out the GST on it as it wasn't like the first coin yadda yadda yadda, Turned out it could of only cost $45 something dollars if it wasn't for the bloody government. Meantime I'm screaming inside at him JUST GIVE ME THE RECEIPT AND LET ME OUT OF HERE.

So what do you all think ? A good buy ?

Next question is do I sell it and use the $ to buy more silver or hang on to it ? What do you Knowledgeable folks here think I should do....I'm still pinching myself and waiting to wake up while planning a trip back in a couple of days with a few hundred to see if he has anymore bargain buys.

Thanks in advance for any advice you might care to give :D

Nice work mate. See if anyone here wants to pay a reasonable price to avoid ebay fees, and buy bullion...

    Love that feeling...

"How much for the one with the Dragon?"

    "Thiiiiiiiiiiiiirty eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeight dollllllllllllllllaaaaaaaaaaaaars"

Then you try and keep it slowed down while you aim for nonchalance and say "yeah, might take that one".

Flip now, turn it into a kilo bar plus change. Give the missus $75.

Thanks people , I think Ive already made up my mind to "Flip It" as it is put. Am I right in thinking that the coin will not appreciate as much in value as bullion will ?

I'm pretty sure it is the real deal Silverfunk, seems to be all original packaging etc and still has the original barcode on the back and a numbered COA, Does anyone know if there is a definite way to tell? Take it out and bite on it for example? LOL.

Yes sell it I don't see it gaining a lot more over the next few years. It has taken a huge jump and now very selective to who will actually buy it, yup cash up and buy some free silver/gold well done good score. It pays to keep the eyes open.

Agree GP - flip it - but I'm a very idiosyncratic numismatist with little patience for collectibles like that.

    I don't know if it's art but I know what I like!

Lunar Series I silver 1oz Year of the Dragon. Worth about $120 or so. Picked a couple up now at regular bullion prices.

I reckon the Pawn dealer was probably thinking he made a killing too! He probably paid $10 for it!

Excellent find, stuff waiting a few days to go back, go back today!

The best kind of deal is one where both parties leave thinking they did well :)

I would definitely go back, establish yourself as a regular... you might find if you frequent there he will start putting things aside for you that he knows your interested in.

When you walk into some of those establishments it often feels like you are about to get your hands all dirty. Too bad if your aforesaid bargain silver collection gets reclaimed by it's rightful owner!

How does that work then? Is the implication that the item was part of a theft and found its way there?

A friend saw a dress in one of those trendy grunge shop that she'd had stolen in a burglary. Had the police down and they retrieved it for her. Shop said they'd often bought secondhand clothes from people.

By the way, id seriously recommend what GP has suggested for you to do.
Flip it on eBay and buy a KG.
You have mentioned you have bought via eBay, selling isnt much different.
If you need pointers or help -welcome to email me, or ask questions in this thread.

Well they say possession is 9/10th's of the law. Of course if it was stolen goods that's another matter. In my experience as a retailer I was once called in by Police to identify stolen goods held by a Pawn Broker we lost in a burglary. The goods were seized and impounded by the Police until we could prove they originated from our premises. We already had the insurance payout so we didn't bother. About three months later the stuff turned up for Police auction. I think the loser is the Pawn Broker in that case. Not sure what happens if the unsuspecting customer ends up with stolen goods.
