Added the Fisch Coin Detector to my arsenal of Sovereign coin checkers. Works very well however you still need a vintage Sovereign checkers as it doesn't have a detector for half Sovereigns.
Nice simple kit especially if travelling. For me I prefer accurate electronic scales, a vernier calliper and micrometer, but once familiar with sovereigns and half sovereigns it becomes second nature and weighing is all that is required.
I loved my old 1800's scale! Pretty easy to get hold of via ebay too - and its a fairly straight test. Running one alongside a scales and/or a fisch tester is a surefire way to test, arguably the best way other than an XRF...
Answered my question really. So you would recommend the antique sovereign testers as accurate? (those old timers knew value didn't they?)
I think you are pretty safe with an antique sovereign tester. I always double check a Sovereign with a Fisch just to be on the safe side. I actually use both testers in my line of work. The Fisch test for 1oz, 1/2, 1/4oz 1/10oz Krugerrands, AGE, Britannia, Isle of Man Angels. As well it also tests for British Sovereigns and African 2 Rand. I still need the antique Sovereign tester to check Half Sovereigns and the South African 1 Rand.
