Question for the knowers - - The back of the Perth Mint 5 gram Certi-card is completely flat (no Kangaroo's). I haven't seen one like this and just wondering if they did make them at some stage as the roo's are now present on all their black cards and also the older green ones. May have been a very early batch I'm not sure. I have contacted 'oziwassabi' about this and he is open to any comments..... Cheers, BM.
Kangaroo Minted Gold Bars issued by The Perth Mint have evolved over time. The main design has remained consistent since the 5g bar was launched in 2009 with our official LBMA stamp (a swan motif surrounded by the words THE PERTH MINT AUSTRALIA) above the bar’s weight and purity. Originally, the back of each bar was plain, but in 2010 we added a pattern of stylized kangaroos, which remains in force today. From the perth mint bullion site. http://www.perthmintbullion.com/au/blog/blog/15-07-07/Another_Fake_Minted_Bar_To_Beware.aspx
I appreciate and welcome any and all questions, this is how we grow the knowledge base here at Silver Stackers and it is how I have gathered 99% of mine! It is particularly poignant given the sad situation involving a PM certicard bar from the other week. Here are some more photos of the bar (excuse the quality from a non pro and a mobile phone) I do not remember where or whom the bar was bought which means it was 4+ years ago. From he photos you can also see there are "burred" edges visible from the back (I assume from the cutting process) and some these edges have rubbed along the plastic leaving some "marking" which shows up as blurry marks in the photo. If anyone has further questions or information, please feel free to ask them in this thread for everyone's benefit! As a side note: if any items I sell are anything other than what I advertise them as, I am more than happy to provide a refund plus the cot of return postage. Also, if there are any members in the Brisbane CBD who provide free (or for a coffee/beer) testing for SS members please make yourself known
Does the bar serial have to have a letter first? From my personal experience they do. At least all the ones I have do. Also all mine have the Roos on the back except the vintage ones I have
My PM 5 Gram certs past and present have Roos on the back and no they don't encroach into the border metal. The serial numbers also start with a letter. The front and rear sides in the corners of the bar also show a different lustre to the metal where the compression of the mint die has not forced the metal in this area to the same level as the rim edge of the bars.
Hi Benkenobi, Can you further explain what you mean by this? "The front and rear sides in the corners of the bar also show a different lustre to the metal where the compression of the mint die has not forced the metal in this area to the same level as the rim edge of the bars." Thanks!
pretty simple really, in the corners of the bar faces on both sides you will see that the gold has a different shine to it. This area is restricted to the corner only. The Mint die when pressing the blank gold ingot out squeezes and forces the metal to fill the die, providing the frosted surface finish from the die. I also had a Pamp Lunar Dragon 5 gram which exhibited the same feature. I should add the point of purchase of these bars was Perth Bullion Co.
I think this is what BenKenobi is talking about oziwassabi corners by StewyD32 posted Sep 24, 2017 at 10:57 PM corners2 by StewyD32 posted Sep 24, 2017 at 10:57 PM
Thank you for adding Benjenobi and stewyd32. The PM 5g is on its way to a member who has testing abilities so we should have a definitive answer by the end of the week! Does anyone know if Bron made the transition to the new site? Also still hoping someone in Brisbane CBD is able to test items for a small fee?
Hi Adam, That 5g is a legit PM bar.. they were produced far earlier than kanga bars...If no one wants it, I'll pick that one up if still available, thx
Thanks bubblebobble2, Item is on its way for testing as we speak. Once it's composition is known, it will either be paid for or sent to Perth Mint for their records so if it isn't sold it will end up being destroyed. I believe it was purchased from Bullion Bourse back in the days when stellaconcepts was floating around! Either way, results will be posted into this thread, Kind regards,
Just a follow up regarding the Perth Mint 5gram (early) certicard. - PMV testing PASS - XRF test PASS - UV lamp test FAIL - did not show "intact" as it should on the green cards (black cards will not show unless tampered with regardless but I believe the greens should without being tampered with.) Due to the card passing on two of the three tests and the most important the bar is definitely genuine. I haven’t done a UV test on any other older green cards to confirm the words should show but I have seen the "intact" on Baird n Co cards so I would have thought it should be there. Still may be of the era before they decided to add the UV wording. Has anyone else done a UV test on a green Perth Mint certi and confirmed the presence of the wording? Cheers, BM.
