At the pricing in this EBay ad ($1/g), one should have a quick read of this page for more - very pertinent - information before buying for anything other than entertainment value: http://strategic-metal.typepad.com/strategic-metal-report/market-reports/
Yeah I had a laugh too when looking at the "is it the next gold" ad. Seems like a pretty cool material to have fun with though! Makes me wanna try it
I've seen a video somewhere where you take this metal, pour it into fun shaped icy-pop moulds, and pop it in the refrigerator. Half an hour or so later, you stand the "sculpture" in a tray/saucer on the outside table whilst having a barbequeue, and watch it dribble away It's very cool for entertainment factor, very few people have heard of this stuff, much less know of it's incredibly low melting point (incidentally, the boiling point is off the charts at 2200 degrees!).
I have heard of this stuff, why am I so surprised you can get it on ebay?! I wonder how many grams is in the picture...
I have some sitting on my kitchen counter and it turns liquid quite often these days. Pretty cool to mess around with. I paid $40 or something and it fills a coin capsule, no idea how many grams though. The melting gallium spoon in a cup of tea could be quite an amusing joke to play on an elderly person
Is it gallium? Why doesn't the seller mention the metal there? It might become expensive later, but... how to sell it? If you're a poor guy, just stack silver and gold, I say!
Definitely Gallium - see the picture in this link - http://chemistry.about.com/od/elementfacts/a/gallium.htm
Confirmed as Gallium with the seller. The picture shows 50g in his hand. I am sorely tempted that is for sure! Get a kookaburra, press it into some clay, melt the gallium, pour into mold, freeze and you have a melting kookaburra! Anyone know how well this metal casts? I guess if you kept it warm enough, long enough, it would take the shape nicely.
I've got some at home it was posted In a coin capsule and it leaked in postage was in one of the recent heat waves the post office had a go at me for it thinking it was mercury pretty fun have mold it into something soon
Brilliant idea! Should cast easily enough, there is a youtube video where they cast a spoon by putting the container in warm water and using a syringe to inject into the mold.
