    ....about traveling and pm's

I had a quick 3 night trip to NZ this weekend just past, I had a little win on my last night in auckland at the casino. This presented me with a little first world problem, what to do with ~$1,500 in kiwi cash that I had not planned on having(on top of what I set aside for duty free booze)

So! I decided to pop into the nz mint. THEY WERE SOLD OUT OF EVERY LITTLE BIT OF KIWI SILVER THEY HAD.... Thanks to the recent dip. So I said what do you have left? "All the perth mint stuff we offer" he says. 2015 kooks/koalas were nz$29.5 each 10oz bars nz$248. After some quick cash counting and calculations (nz$100=A$91.21 with no comish was the best rate we found for a friend who had a little more luck/balls whatever) so I worked out I'd be getting them for A$226.5 if I had changed my money. SWEET! "I'll take 6 10oz bars(perth mint) please"
So we're all going through security and as planned they pop up as black as can be on the X-ray "what you got here mate?" Says the security gentleman. "Few silver ingots" I say. "Cool, just grab ya stuff and come this way" he says. I fully expected this. So we head to a desk nearby that has a few spots so they can deal with travelers one on one without anyone else seeing, much more comforting than out in the open. I open the box after struggling to get them out of the paper bag that the box just squeezed into "You're alright mate have a great flight" he says and I'm on my way.

Next stop melbourne customs. "What you got here" says the customs lady.
    "Few silver bars" me
    "Ok, worth how much"? Her
    "Umm $1488 wait $1488 NZ"me
She says "ok hold on a moment" and walks off into the offices
About 3 minutes later she returns.
"This is you're wife?" She asks
    "Yeah" me
"Ok lucky you, because I can accept this as being an investment for you and your wife I can split the value. The limit for any precious metals is A$1,000" she says.
She goes on to say "next time you'll have to talk to a customs broker if you want to bring in more.
After running on no sleep for 40+hours at that point I just wanted to get out of there otherwise I would have asked about that process. So I just smiled, thanked her and almost ran out to have a smoke

Oh and when I got home I jumped on gold stackers to see what they were going for, A$232.6 at the time, so not too bad

That's bringing into Australia without talking to a customs broker, that's what she said anyways and I couldn't be arsed asking more about it.
The way I see it is it's just another way to sting people. Doesn't bother me it's just a once off and I never have the money to buy that much(25year old with a mortgage)

Wonder if she was confusing the rules for non-investment bullion and 999 pure bullion?

Seems odd that you can bring in $10k of cash, but only $1k of PM's

$1000 is the threshold for GST when importing items, so maybe that's what she wanted to charge you, not realising that 999 PM's are GST free?

Na when she pulled that $1k rule out I was like even though GST doesn't apply and she said it was still $1k didn't ask about what the penalty was.
Couple other changes I noted was $900 limit for shopping overseas was reduced to $450
And cigarettes was reduced to 50 cigarettes

Na I'm not a big drinker at all, few big nights a year and no more than a couple drinks a few times a month.

And I know there's not much excuses for smoking but it's been a terrible year and picked it up after quitting for about 3 1/2 years. I was smoking for about 6/7years prior to that(started young, and hid it well) but $180/carton is retarted but I'm the stupid one for buying em. I gotta get my head a little straight after losing my brother then they're gone

Does this impact online purchases shipped to Australia? I thought it was still a $1000 limit before GST is charged.

Yeah see she doesn't know what she's talking about which is what I've always expected from these people.

That's a very handy link and anyone planning on doing this should have a printed copy of that with them.

I reckon if it got to the point where she had to calculate duty and found it didn't apply she would have ended up red faced
