Who is responsible for keeping you, your family and your property safe? Is it the police, the locks on your doors, or is it you? As the saying goes, when the seconds count, the police are minutes away.

Australian law prevents you from having the means to defend yourself. That includes things like knives or clubs, and defensive items such as pepper spray. Even wearing a bullet proof vest is illegal.

It shouldn't be that way. The Liberal Democrats believe you have every right to secure your family, your home and your property against criminals.

This is unlikely to happen in Australia...

VIDEO: Georgia woman shoots robbers, kills one

A Georgia woman opened fire on a trio of robbers who broke into her house, killing one of the three invaders.

Officers in Gwinnett County are still hunting for the other two burglars, who escaped after their botched break in last week, WSB-TV reported.

The woman, a local restaurant manager who has not been identified, was staying with a housemate on Sept. 16 while working on a job-related project. Around 4 a.m., three armed men burst through the front door, surveillance video from inside the house showed.

Weapons you may not have for self defence in Australia: No Pepper spray/Mac, acoustic anti-personnel device, batons, tasers, knives or firearms permitted

Might be time to learn how to do BJJ :)

Can someone please find me cases of children in Australia who shoot themselves or are shot by sibblings? There must be dozens of them with the strict gun laws we have here. Strict gun laws result in the deaths of hundreds of children don't they?

Child shot for stealing fruit of a tree in someones yard, property owner was just "defending their property. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. People should be able to defend rheir property, the kid was a thief.

Guns are tools. Some people I would not trust with a pair of scissors, let alone a gun.

Any tool can be abused, so a gun kept at home for self defense can be taken outside and used in a crime.

Circumstances for people can change, a well balanced individual can suffer a life changing event or mental health issues and what was a defensive tool could be used for a crime.

I am an LDP supporter, but I would not want to live in a country like America. I don't hunt, I don't farm, I don't need a gun.

However I have spent a lot of money on locks for my doors ($200) per lock. I have bought a very solid door and frame ($$$ way overspent), I have window locks but I am thinking of getting double glazing which has sound and heat insulation properties as well as really good security features.

We just lost our last dog, we will probably end up getting another one in the next year or two.

There are plenty of ways to defend yourself without filling the streets with guns.

I would rather see tasers and pepperspray legalised. They can still be used as a threat but they are limited in range and the mistakes are less fatal. If the LDP stopped trying to push through gun laws and concentrated on legalising pepperspray they would probably get more traction.

We don't seem to have the gun culture of the USA so support for gun ownership among the general population is low, meaning that many people are turned off completely by the LDP advocating for guns, something the main stream media made much noise about during the run up to the election.

Dont qoute me on this but i have heard that if some one is in your houes and you confront them once you have told them to get out 3 times you have the rite to defend your self with reasonable force to keep you and who ever is in the house safe...

I doubt it, if you ask them to leave and they are not being violent you would have to call the police to get them removed.

If they are being violent then you don't need to ask them to leave at all, you can defend yourself as long as you don't use excessive force.

But I am not a lawyer.

    One of my personal favourites

Pro-gun Florida mom accidentally shot by 4-year-old son after leaving loaded weapon in car, bragging about how tot gets 'gets jacked up' for target practice.

Lol how did that work out for her?

3 year old shoots mother and father - must have been shitty parents. Thank god the kid had a gun so he could defend themselves.

On a serious note this kid must have had some serious skills to shoot both parents, way to go kid you have my respect....... Mad skills

This raises a serious question though nad it really needs to be addressed, why did the parents not have a firearm so they could defend themselves? Why did'nt they shoot their three year old before the kid shot them? Really poor drills on the part of the parents.
