Simple way: If MS69 : MS68 is 1 : <= (less than or equal to) 2, buy MS68 If MS69 : MS68 is 1 : > (more than) 2, buy MS69 Today's MS68 could be tomorrow's MS69.
Try to buy the best quality you can afford but.... shop around. Buy quality not quantity! For a long term investment, modern coins need to be perfect imo If you aren't sure what to buy, sit back, have a coldy, look at the prices and then think about why you want to buy. Take a close look at both coin, under strong lighting and loupe, then you will know which to buy. Numerical grade is only meaningful when you buy coin on sight unseen basis. In public auction where a buyer can view the coin, MS69 may not have advantage over MS68. I agree you have to buy the perfect coin, but 69 or 70 doesn't mean the coin is perfect. 68 definitely doesn't meant the coin is less than perfect. Ask yourself, how many times you inspect your MS69 or even 70 coin under strong lighting and good loupe, just like the grader do?
Yeah, I'm buying overseas so I won't be able to examine the coin itself and only from pictures. I do use a loupe once in awhile for my OMP's sometimes just for the heck of it and some times to see dirt.
my 1996SD MS68 vs MS69 ... I bought them separately. and inspected them.. the MS68 condition is much more better than the MS69 one.
if you want to get OMP, please accept it has some defects or dirts or even tone and spot. those rare panda with fine-perfect condition already been bought and sent for grading already. keep bargain and the seller will give you the other coin that suit for the price range. if you can't accept any defects, please buy MS70. because they will make u more comfortable, even thou maybe the MS70 also having some defects. but 'MS70' labelled on the slab will make u okay with that defects.
lol, exactly, it has been discussed already, grading is subjective, human judgement, and that includes factoring graders' mood on that particular day
@smokycmpot Hello smoky, that is not a CoA, its a Collecting Paper and was distributed with all MDM Collectible Coins, MDM was one of biggest China Distributor in Germany. Some People collecting those Papers but it may be buyed without the Coin, there are no CoA for 1/2oz Ag Pandas, only 1997 and 1998 HK Expo 1/2oz Panda have a CoA. Price is spicy.

yep.....like I said stats are very decieving 12 bids on an omp on May 22 2012 for a sale of 76usd ,that might as well be 5 years ago , as far as the panda 5y market is concerned ,go try to buy some for any where close to that price today,sure you may snipe one off of e bay for around that if your lucky,but I have been talking to pretty big dealers in Shanghai they are looking for 180 usd each in OMP 10 ct sheets 1998, common dates 96,97 have gone up 25usd per coin in the last week and only going higher ,these are a very under estimated low mintage segment of the panda market IMHO ,all 5y panda,s where like the unwanted stepchild of MCC for years, I really have no definitive answer on what lit the fire,maybe Peter,s commentary? but they are white hot ...so like I said stats can be very decieving.
