    Hi
I inherited a nice old ring years ago, and now would like to sell or trade it but don't want to rip myself or anyone off. Are valuations or appraisals worth the paper they are written on ? Could I realistically expect to get anywhere near what it is valued at if sold privately or half or 1/4 it's value (I realize valuations are inflated for insurance replacement purposes)
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

Best to weigh it then use the calculator (top of page) to give you ballpark on the metal value.
    Stones.. That's a hard one.

Post an image of the ring here with it's details and you will get some honest advice. And probably some not honest too.

1/4 a jewellers valuation would likely be overly-optimistic.. but some are more so than others...

IF the value is mainly in gold or platinum then the jewellers valuation might be relevant to an actual price you may be able to get.. if its based on a diamond then not likely.

Cash talks! eBay is a good marketplace. Do you have any paperwork backing up the classification of any stones? If you described your item accurately and honestly I don't think you would be ripping yourself off if you put it on eBay.

I notice vintage pieces on eBay will go for at least melt +10% if its a really ugly design but nice timeless designs can go for a lot more. Still nowhere near retail or insurance value, but more 'fair' market value. There's a lot of jewellery shoppers on eBay.

PS. I recently bought a piece on eBay for less than 1/4 of its current 'valuation' and still think I overpaid slightly.

the band has 18c on it so i dare say its 18 carat white gold, don't know what the green stone is and 4 diamonds.

Probably a emerald if its 18kt but could be jade or sphene or a bunch of other stones - green diamond or sapphire or tanzanite (all possible)

Good news for you is emeralds are actually valuable and desirable and rare (like wise are Tanzanite and green diamonds (although both very rare) and 18kt gold is about 75% pure so its going to be desireable.. cant do much else without an image

    cheers...

Once you have the valuation it should specify the carat weight of the stones and of the 18K white gold ring. You'll be able to get an approx wholesale price from that, anything above will be solely determined by the prospective buyers.

I would hazard a guess the stone is a peridot.
Peridot should be a lighter green but maybe it's just poor lighting.

    Valuation certificate states
One ladies ring 18ct white gold 6.56 grams, set with 1 emerald cut green tourmaline 10.8 x 6.3mm, and 4 brilliant cut diamonds totaling 0.20ct $2200
Still don't know what would be a fair price, depends weather someone really likes it or not I guess. Might try my luck on eBay, unless anyone here is interested in a trade for silver, let me know via pm
Thank you all for your help

Now that I know what sort of stone it is; I can give you a pretty good idea of what the ring is worth if you trade it into a jeweller. Would just break up the various components (Tourmaline, diamonds and gold) sans labour and that's what it's worth.
It's not going to be pretty :(
What 1for1 posted about valuations is factual; these valuation certificates are not worth the paper they are printed on.

Thanks for the advice and honesty.
I didn't want to make a goose of myself by asking too much for it, but to an untrained eye like mine it looks pretty impressive

Ahh... tourmaline.. of course.. (face palm!) not the most expensive stone but it is pretty.. green is a much harder colour to find also but not as popular either.

Aurora gets this type of thing all the time so will know the type of price you would be really talking about.

ebay with a buy it now price is an option for you. take nice images and hope for a buyer at your price if you have the patients.

    cheers,
