Sure this has been posted already

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-50979463

Iran's most powerful military commander, General Qasem Soleimani, has been killed by a US air strike in Iraq.

The 62-year old spearheaded Iranian military operations in the Middle East as head of Iran's elite Quds Force.

He was killed at Baghdad airport, alongside local Iran-backed militias, early on Friday in a strike ordered by US President Donald Trump.

Gen Soleimani's killing marks a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Under his leadership, Iran had bolstered Hezbollah in Lebanon and other pro-Iranian militant groups, expanded Iran's military presence in Iraq and Syria and orchestrated Syria's offensive against rebel groups in the country's long civil war.

2020 is already out of control in so many ways and this certainly adds to the mix. Not quite sure what the long term strategy is with Iran but the US seems to be pushing forward with it. The have oil security so I presume the Middle East is of no real concern to them currently. Some partners might not be so happy when oil supply gets interrupted.

Somehow this seems to play into Russian hands as they will benefit greatly from increased oil and gas revenues.

US will pull out from Iraq which also plays to the Russian influence in the region and Chinese as well. Still the US won’t e bogged down with Iraqi politics and can focus on Israel and Saudi Arabia.

It will surely mean a lot of suffering for Iranians but this is surely going to be costly for the US.

    Time will tell.

It would probably play into China’s hands too as it spreads an already overstretched US military even further.

America murders again. The Pentagon must be super itchy to get a war going with Iran.

Noted that Trump ordered the hit. I wonder what combination of flattery and deceit got his signature on the kill order.

Expect retaliation from Rouhani & co.

The US surely can't afford another war.....they're in debt up to their eyeballs as things stand.

It would seem to us that the US can’t afford a extended war but if you look how they have executed the Iran strategy from withdrawing from the treaty to now I would say they are executing a plan with gusto.

Iran and Syria have been on their very long term plans since the 70s so it’s not altogether unusual but they aren’t the strength they used to be.

Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria has surely shown them that there are no easy wins to be had. Then again never underestimate the stupidity of some of these strategists.

I think it will bring serious implications for Iran there is no doubt. But they do not strike me as a people that will just roll over and take the pain no matter the difficulties they suffer. The Persians are a proud people with a long history.

The US organised the coup to overthrow the Shah in the late 70's & just 40'ish years later they want to eradicate the regime they placed in power.

    Deja vu anyone?

I don't think Iran will respond immediately, but with the death of a General, I expect a retaliation will be of equal or higher value. Also the fact this assassination was done so publicly and not covertly I suspect it is just a ploy to lure Iran into the war they have been seeking so badly.

This is not just a General that can be replaced by another General. He is the single man operation whose connection and charisma holds together all of Iran's proxy armies and preventing their rebellion.

    the revenge would come
remember when US shoot down an Iranian airliner, they bombed PanAm
may be the easiest way to kill a US general, is to kill an Iranian one, and the revenge would settle the work (may be that was the plan all along?)

being kicked out is the correct term here, rather than pull out from Iraq

Remember it wasn't just Solemani killed in the strike, also Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis the leader of the PMU was also killed. It will be interesting to see how Iraqis will react to this as well. Will they actually commit to storming the embassy this time? Only time will tell.

No idea probably his protege or maybe Soleimani had a successor lined up just for this situation. I also wonder if Tehran will publicly announce the new head of the Quds Force or keep it secret to protect their identity.

It will be public. They like to turn their leaders into messiahs and then eventually martyrs because they know assassinations aren't in short supply.

I hope there is no WW3, but it is pretty amazing that the US and allies know exactly where these folks are and can deliver a missile right on top of their car.

Trump is not a warmonger but is an aggressive counter puncher. These folks want to f' with the US embassy, they need a to learn a lesson. Unlike the beta male Obummer and Hillary who allowed it and did nothing afterwards.

Remember when candidate Trump responded to fellow candidate Carly Fiorina's attack by saying (I'm paraphrasing) "would anyone vote for that face"? At that point Carly was a done deal (yes ugly face). Seemed mean and over the top but that is how Trump responds.

nothing amazing, mosad have been watching his plan to travel to iraq on civilian passenger plane
the attack shows the US weakness, not able to deal with the blows; embassy watch post set ablaze, contractor killed, Russia China Iran navies ships training on the nearby sea
the US embassy in Iraq will soon be vacated and burned down
Iraq have been lost after >1 trillion dollars spent, with 500,000 Iraqi civilian slaughter
