A precious gold nugget in stark relief against a work boot (Andrew Balding)

    Modern gold rush
The high price of gold is sending many out into the bush to turn their hand to prospecting.

At the moment the precious metal is around $US1,560 dollars an ounce.

But for some prospecting has been a way of life, regardless of the gold price

Andrew Balding caught up with Pilbara prospector, Mick Napier who says that, for him, getting into prospecting wasn't a story of quick riches.

"For the first eight years I found nothing except bullets and pieces of tin" he says.

"I then found my first gold nugget and it was about $20 worth of gold but I thought I'd found a million bucks."

I rather do overtime and work weekends to get extra cash to buy gold, easier and prob end up with more gold. Staggering and digging through the bush all day everyday. No thanks... would be a cool hobby though to head out for a weekend here and there, but not full time.

I agree in principle, except for the fact most fossickers wouldn't consider this 'work' as much as R&R out in the bush... with a potential PayDay whilst having fun.

Saw a doco many years ago about an 'old codger' who bought a beat up old grader and a good metal detector. Somewhere near Kalgoorlie.

He picked an area of an acre or two, and shaved off 6 inches, did the lot with the GT and did the whole process over and over again..

He would not tell the interviewer if he found any gold, but he had a smile on his face.

Yep something to do when camping when you get sick of fishing.

I keep talking about it with the Brissy lads, whether we actually get to do it before Christmas is another story...

I just think it'd be a good opportunity for a weekend camping, but with the possiblity of some gold there too, however small :D

It's the small possibilities that count in some things......

like the small possibility that a large bit of gold is found and then the small possibility that an argument breaks out, and then the small possibility of a boulder ending up smashing someone's skull in and so forth ;)

A mate is currently putting new claims in. :D I'll be out there like a shot if he needs help... Over the city, spending 80% of my time in the bush hunting and digging gold sounds like the life to me, You can keep your overtime!! ;)

Nothing like it,but i have seen many rush out and buy a $5000 machine only to sell it 12 months later totally despondent because they missed the golden rule.

    'Learn your machine'

    and
