I like the 1990 Kooks with their "brushed look" background which is distinctive and rather unique imo. But there seems to also exist a "proof-like" 1990 bullion kook. What's the story here - were these just struck from unbrushed planchets? They're definitely not the proof 1990 kooks, they're not the frosted uncirculated variant either (nothing appears frosted), but they don't look the same as the normal brushed 1990 kooks. Please enlighten me? https://www.auctionzip.com/auction-lot/1990-AUSTRALIA-KOOKABURRA-1-OZ-SILVER-PF-LIKE_3A3F284957
I have owned around 20 - 30 pieces of this coin in the past and all have had the appearance of your images, i.e. less frosted than other Perth Mint bullion coins.
Ok, thanks BB - maybe the seller just coined it (pun intended)... See this pair as well, on the queen side is easier to see, but the planchet appears not brushed on the left hand side coin?
Hmmm that is strange, while less frosted than other coins, all those I've owned have always had that brushed appearance of the coin on the right. Can't explain the left coin.
Perth Mint released a few of the early 1990-91 1oz Kooks with no capsule in a black pouch with the coin having been lacquered to give it a proof like finish
1991 1oz Kookaburra lacquered Even some 28 years later this coin remains in mint condition with no toning due to the protection of the lacquer
Thanks @Silverman99 , I was counting on you having info I have that black box but no COA unfortunately. Would you say the 1990 lacquered kook from that box appears "brushed" or "non-brushed" on the Queen side like the left coin on the comparison photo above? The 1990 kook that I got with the black box is with brushed background, but obviously the coin could have been changed to the box any number of times. Happy either way - just curious to know.
Hi Jultorsk I’m no expert but to me the coin does look brushed from the photos so I’m assuming the lacquer was brushed on rather than being dipped but I stand corrected as another stacker may have the knowledge on how these were produced
Apologies Jultorsk for hijacking your thread but being a bit of a Kookaburra nutter and an avid collector of such this to me is the jewel in the crown of the kooks apart from the asthetic appeal and design of the 2008 & 2009
You're always welcome to hijack with such a treat @Silverman99 Wowsers what a kook, thanks for posting!
