The original PMV is very accurate and will tell the difference of a 22ct gold coin that has either 5.33% of copper or 8.33%. It will even fail something that is the incorrect mix of gold/copper content ie 91.67Au, 2%Ag, 7.33%Cu. You may be thinking silver as it is very close in resitivity but still not the same, counterfeiters will try use a composition of these to match resistivity of gold or silver. But copper does not pass for silver...

It is seen now that counterfeiters can replicate the resistivity of gold or silver to "trick" the machine but then the dead giveaway is size. Specific gravity is the key here. Yes a ultrasonic thickness tester would be very helpful here.

I have made a simple spreadsheet with formula's (took a while to formulate) whereby I can just input weight/length/width/diameter etc to give me an expected measurement due to the specific gravity. Therefore if I can measure the bar/coin and it can give me a pretty good idea of what to expect. These are the calculations that the PMV pro does internally except is has its own precise thickness measurement tool. Myself, I use a vernier caliper but realistically I haven't really needed to use it much as experience can usually detect a fake regarding to size anyway.

Yes you are correct !
Its actually silver that is similar in resistivity to copper.
So if you have the pmv set to pure silver 999 and place a copper coin on the pmv you could get a reading that is in range with silver.
Thats why is recommend to do a size and thickness test.
The pmv pro addresses all these .

Do you mean any wand or the new bullion wand. I would suggest to get all the wands. better to have them than not in case you start to collect certain items and unable to test properly in the future
