Hello - I bought the pictured coin cheaply in a bulk estate sale. It doesn't appear to match the coins issued that year (no denomination) but I can't find any similar looking fakes posted online. Is this a genuine gold coin? Thanks in advance for any help.
You should try weighing it, and then measure the density and it should be about 19.3. Alternatively ask a dealer to check it.
It's a copy of this coin http://www.perthmint.com.au/catalog...al-gold-coin-program-1oz-gold-proof-coin.aspx The real one as per the Perth Mint page has the normal 100 Dollar face value These fakes range between 10c to $10 pending the quality and quantity you get them in
Despite the inaccuracy, the quality is pretty good, although the mirror field is a little 'orange peely 'I reckon 'someone' put a lot of effort into that fake. They'll get better with practise
Very obvious fake, just the colour, how shiny it is and there fact it looks like it's coming out of a mold. no hesitation
It is a fake but it is a lesson in how good the fakes can look and test. That's not all they are faking and don't be surprised if they add the denomination in the future. Even thought they decided not to add the denomination (it's not a mistake they omitted it), they quality, weight, detail is there. Much better fakes exist.
The problem with fakes is multiplied when you don't have an original to compare against. The stacking community is insulated in this respect through existing coins, chums and reliable dealers. Newbies have little chance of spotting a fake and may hoard it for years before trying to sell it.
There is two things I have never seen missing along side that old lizard, and that is a date or denomination. It's so fake the gold plating is fake. Sorry dude, turtle-heading fakes burn honest people all the time DYODD What was the damage?
How sure are you? Steve was so ashamed when he went home that day and he realised he forgot to add the $100 to the die, he thought he destroyed them all the next day but john the boss's itchy fingers got the best of him and he nicked 3 of them. Sounds like the story of a few unique or rare coins out there? Ha what's the chance? he should get it tested, I highly recommend the acid test
You already have the answer but to everyone else; don't you think the mirror finish is a bit poor quality? Doesn't seem smooth, surely the real one is smooth even zoomed in like the photos?
