Bridget McKenzie, remarkably, is still in her job. The Minister won't resign. Nor is she willing to publicly defend herself, leaving the Government bleeding over the sports rorts saga as Parliament prepares to return.

There once was a time when ministers causing this much obvious damage to their own side would see the writing on the wall and walk.

There once was a time when prime ministers would stem that damage, show some authority and give their marching orders to a minister who's done wrong.

These days, however, staring down critics and refusing to give an inch is seen as a virtue.

These days, prime ministers outsource decisions on whether their own ministerial code has been breached.

Morrison is stuck in a holding pattern
For more than a week now, the head of the Prime Minister's Department, the nation's top public servant, has been considering whether McKenzie has breached the code by awarding a grant to a shooting club of which she was a member.

What's all this talk about sports grants? The whole saga explained
    [IMG]
Claims of sports rorts are all over the news. Get up to speed quickly with the year's biggest political scandal — who did what, when, and why people are angry.

Why it's taking so long to conclude this investigation is unclear.

Having called for the report though, Scott Morrison can hardly pre-empt its findings. He's stuck in a holding pattern, unable to act even if he wanted to.

He's also, don't forget, still waiting to hear back from the Attorney-General Christian Porter as to whether McKenzie acted with legal authority in dishing out the sporting grants at all.

The auditor-general was explicit in warning she may not have had any legal right to do what she did.

As these inquiries continue and the saga drags on, the Government's defences are crumbling.

    Trust us, we're politicians
One of its favoured talking points, that "all projects funded were eligible", was rendered ridiculous when the ABC's Andrew Probyn revealed the colour-coded list of how grants were really awarded.

Eligibility had little to do with it. Many of the most deserving and extremely eligible clubs were overlooked in favour of less deserving clubs that just happened to be in marginal seats.

    Political pork-barrelling
    [IMG]
Australia has a long, not so proud and not particularly creative history of political pork-barrelling, but this time it's different, writes David Speers.

The other favoured talking point, that the program was all about "helping girls who currently have to get changed behind the sheds", was also undermined when The Guardian revealed 12 clubs that specifically applied for money to build girls' change rooms were, you guessed it, overlooked.

    These arguments plainly aren't working.

So under sustained questioning at the National Press Club, the Prime Minister rolled out a new and somewhat novel line of defence: trust us, we're politicians.

"You know, politicians, ministers, members of parliament, we're part of our community," he argued.

"We know what's happening in our community. We're in touch with our community. We know the things that can make a difference in our community."

Why can't the Dem's just cut to the chase and get Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders on a ticket for the White House.

And if Biden won, he'd die in mysterious circumstances (all Trump's fault of course) within months and the Dem bought media would finally get their HRC poster girl as POTUS.

I personally can't see a Biden / HRC ticket but we are talking the Dem's, so any level of insanity is possible.

Correct. However now the impeachment backfired on Dems and Biden got fatally(?) tarnished in the process (note I'm not saying if he was guilty of anything re Ukraine, it's just that his reputation took a hit) - which was Pelosi's worry from the get-go. Biden's support in Iowa caucus was abysmal. And we know Hillary abhors Bernie. Which is why Dems are now in a pretty desperate position. Buttigieg winning against Trump, anyone wanna bet?

Buttigieg (unfortunate name for a gay candidate lol) and Gabbard ticket would beat Trump. Young, fresh, veteran. Every attack by Trump would backfire and give them more supporters. The anti-gays would be a bloc but the new voter registrations would probably neutralise the gay haters. If Obama could overcome the racism, then Buttigieg can overcome the homophobes. But it's an impossible ticket. The Democrat leaders wouldn't allow it.

The fix is in on Sanders again and I'm sure the Democrats leadership would rather 4 more years of Trump than allow someone, like Buttigieg who they don't approve to run. So Biden/Clinton is still my bet.

I'm sure you are looking at this in a logical way from your perspective, but it is very far from reality (other than your observation about them giving Sanders the shaft).

Even gay people support Warren over Pete. Pete came in fourth out of four. If the gays don't like Pete, Christians don't like Pete, who the hell likes Pete in the US?

Hillary Clinton goes to a gifted-student primary school in New York to talk about the world. After her talk she offers question time.

One little boy puts up his hand. Hillary asks him what his name is. "Kenneth," he says.

"And what is your question, Kenneth?" she asks.

"I have three questions," he says.
"First -- whatever happened in Benghazi?
"Second -- why would you run for president if you are not capable of handling two e-mail accounts?
"And, third -- whatever happened to the missing six billion dollars while you were Secretary of State?"

Just then the bell rings for recess. Hillary informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess.

When they resume Hillary says, "Okay, where were we? Oh, that's right, question time.
    Who has a question?"

A different boy -- little Johnny -- puts his hand up.

Hillary points to him and asks him what his name is.
    "Johnny," he says.

"And what is your question, Johnny?" she asks.

"I have five questions," he says.

"First -- whatever happened in Benghazi?
"Second -- why would you run for president if you are not capable of handling two e-mail accounts?
"Third -- whatever happened to the missing six billion dollars while you were Secretary of State?
"Fourth -- why did the recess bell go off 20 minutes early?
    "And, fifth -- where's Kenneth?"
