I was wondering whether he'd take time out to chip in. I thought his security detail would prevent it.

Oh.. You blue barrow pushers..Kevin Krudd indeed helped out in the floods here in Qld in his own electorate. Not just a photo for the media. He was on the job for some hours before he sustained a nasty leg cut and could no longer continue in that stinking flood water.

Give credit where it is due..Tony Abbott if he is doing his share is entitled to credit but please don't think good deeds are restricted to either the red or blue team.

Anna Blyth didn't contribute to do physical work during the recent floods in Qld but she did her share by raising the spirits and morale of the people in their times of need.

Lots of publicity about the 4 children starting the fires but what about the DEFENCE FORECE admiting that firing in the artillery range may well have started a major fire>

OVER TO YOU. MINISTER FOR DEFENCE.

    Regards Errol 43

Sorry Errol but can you imagine Shorten, CONroy, Plibersek, Wong or Albanese getting their hands dirty? I'm happy to be corrected if they have some form of outstanding record of community service but i seriously doubt it. Shorten even verbally abused an asian storekeeper for goodness sake's. Is this the kind of man we should want as PM?

Abbott as an individual is far better than anyone on the red/green side of politics.

I've also noticed generally and its only my opinion that salt of the earth, humble people that truly love Australia vote Liberal/national/katter or the right in general.

I agree, politics aside I have to say that Tony Abbott is clearly a decent community man, giving service for decades as a firefighter, teacher in remote communities and surf life saver, as well as keeping fit and running marathons to raise money for breast cancer research and for a women's homeless shelter. He was doing this long before achieving leadership if the opposition and subsequently becoming PM, he should be respected for this, he is setting an example that sadly I don't see anyone else in politics following.

It's good that they feel that their time is best spent fighting fires rather than what they are paid to do. Shirking off work and stealing jobs that belong to firefighters!

I am pretty jaded about what politicians do that isn't scoring points, it is obvious that anything he did would be reported in the "News". Now all the other polies are going to have to get involved otherwise they will feel left out. Fortunately with the whole lot of them out in the bushfires they won't be able to run the rest of the country into the ground.

The difference is he's been a CFS volunteer for years.

he didn't just don on a uniform and do it for publicity.

Why does nearly the large majority of Australia outside the main cities vote for National/Liberal? Look at the electoral map and its a sea or Coalition blue.

And country people are some of the nicest people i've had the pleasure to meet.

    Or havent you noticed?

How long has he been a politician?

As I said I am a bit jaded when it comes to politicians and what they will do for publicity, kissing babies just doesn't do it for the headlines anymore. It all looks good on the resume and is something people will remember (or be reminded of) when it comes to compulsory voting time.

    Fair enough.

I believe he is doing it for the right reasons not personal gain.

Do you understand the role of the volunteer fire fighters and the work that they do and what they give up in order to do so? They are stealing jobs from no-one.

And the other 90% of the population that live in cities are all assholes ?

Statements like 'the nice, humble people who love Australia vote for my party' are just ludicrous.
