Hi, I have recently purchased a 1987 1/2 oz gold nugget coin that the Perth Mint produced. Just wondering if they ping like Krugerrands and Sovereigns? These ping and seem to resonate forever! The nugget has a light ping but doesn't seem to resonate and goes quiet very quickly. Just wondering if that is typical of the 1/2oz coins from the Perth Mint? The coin weighs perfect, measures perfect and specific gravity is spot on and looks very good and intricate. I don't have any other pure coins to compare it to though. I will probably get it XRF'd for final peace of mind in any case.
Got no idea about what the 'ping' should be but keep in mind both sovs and krugs are not pure, so they probably will sound different as there are other metals in there
Yep, I think because the sovs etc are an alloy and harder they may ring better. But don't know about the pure's and smaller pures also. Cheers for the input.
Hi gsp, I have a Fisch Coin Ringer. My experience with it is that .999 gold coins just don't ring or resonate like harder 22ct coins like Krugerrands or sovereigns. While they do ring slightly, the 'ping' is not as strong or long lasting like the harder coins. Hope this helps. Acorn
Hi Acorn, Thanks for the info. At least that supports what my coin is doing. Much appreciated!!! Cheers, gsp.
