How the hell does this work?
"SMX’s technology enables any solid, liquid or gas to be invisibly and irrevocably ‘marked’ using a chemical-based barcode"

They could manipulate the various ratios of isotopes to produce a unique combination. They would be chemically the same but able to be read using a mass spectrometer.

On 99.99% gold that can still be tracked when melted down?
Isotopes are at most a half life in the order of days

They could always tag the other 0.01% of stuff that is not gold.

How does it survive a meltdown?

The same way it survived the initial meltdown to make it. Don't forget that you are talking about approximately 6x10^19 atoms of junk for every 200 grams of gold. Stick a couple of other metals with isotopes in there as the junk and you have an isotope ratio you can use to identify the gold. All they would be doing is making the 0.01% that is normally junk into something useful. They are not making it impossible to get rid of the tracer, just very expensive to make it not worthwhile.
