I know it's probably come up before but I have to ask anyway. Why are Perth Mint Gold Proofs so exorbitantly expensive? I can understand mostly the mark up on silver proof coins but for the gold? Seriously? If you weren't trying to get some sort of Lunar set or other Proof set from the Perth mint and just wanted some very nice gold coins, the obvious choice at those prices would be a PCGS 69 or 70 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle. A far superior quality coin IMO. Can some one justify the price for me please.
It just is what it is , if people are paying that , thats what they will charge. They also mint plenty of very nice bullion coins at much closer to spot. If you think the PM prices are high look at the modern chinese proof coins.
Solely for collection purpose? I bought a couple cos my kiddos were born in that year. Hefty premium but the coins are superb.
Thats surely been the case on the Discover Australia range. I'd recommend hanging out for them on the secondary market... Then you'll pay a much lower premium!
I also liked the 2012 DISCOVER AUSTRALIA set. The price is just insane especially if the gold price goes down for real.
