So I watch A&E channel too much.
Storage Wars, Duck Dynasty, Hardcore Pawn, American Diggers etc

My favourite though is Pawn Stars. The bite size level of information about each piece that comes in is just right.
For those that know the show, assuming most do, would know Richard aka the old man, loves silver.
In one episode Rick acquired a wheelbarrow full including an unmarked 9k bar (or thereabouts) which he decided to turn into bullion coins to suprise the Old Man with. These go on eBay for $65 USD.

In a later episode they acquire an old gun and yada yada yada Rick and Chumlee have a target shooting bet and anyway, long story short, they shoot and hit one of the coins.

I screen shot the short scene where they zoomed in on the coin and well, I'm pretty sure if I shot an ASE or other .9999 fine silver bullion coin it wouldn't look like this:

Mythbusters did an episode shooting 'silver dollars' so you may want to look that up for comparison. (I don't remember how far back).

They come in a nice black backed case:

Unfortunately the NGC autographed ones can only be purchased in store

Silver dollars would react very differently to a .999 round because the dollars are 90% which means they are a lot harder than the .999.

I think the coin looks fine, it just looks like the bullet ripped off a little silver as the round would have rotated to the left when hit and the bullet fragmented.

At last! A worthwhile use for those overpriced, stupid tourist trinkets! Praise be!

  5. I don't follow Pawn stars and didn't see the Mythbusters episode mentioned, unfortunately, but I have managed to hit a coin with an unjacketed .357 with a very light load.
It wasn't a silver coin but the damage was certainly a lot more dramatic than that. Definitely a hole in it.
    Maybe they used a flintlock?
Doesn't really look like bullet damage. :|

    edit,
Ah! I know. They used some of that SBSS werewolf ammo. One of those .45 ACP one oz jobs.
Silver must be getting cheap. :D

^^ one of the worst shows on television. The fued between Seth and Ashley made me stop watching it after 3 episodes.

Pawn Stars is at least informative.

I love Hardcore Pawn, I mean it is just such an education. We would never even know people like that existed if it weren't for the telly.

Rick is a genius. Love that too.

Mind you... in regards to be a Pawn Shop in DETROIT Michigan, or whatever is left there now, you gotta be certain things would be pretty hot up at times, if only for the disparity of Social classes & the ugliness of usury...

didnt they shoot it with .22 ? thats like .5 of a cm wide ammo its tiny

  18. Ah, well if it was a .22 that explains the lack of damage.
Small and mean but no great punching power behind a 40 grain (2.5 grams) lump of lead.
It would just splatter off the coin.
Probably boring all of you, sorry.
I just happen to have a keen interest in ballistics.

    AWESOME!

But like really. If you shot a .22 at a silver medallion would it peel back and reveal another metal? Reaaaaally? Not awesome.
