The hard plastic cases which have historically housed new panda issues are never fully flush. If you pick one up and turn it around, you can usually hear a small plastic click as the coin moves and settles inside the holder. (Especially on the old style of plastic case)

I am curious if this is something to be worried about over the long term. Is it possible that this casual handling and movement would ever cause damage to the coin? I have to believe that with enough movement and contact, that eventually it would produce wear on the face or edges as it contacts the hard plastic.

Yep, I think over time, handling the Pandas in cases that aren't flush does cause damage.

Grading and slabbing helps to fix that issue.
