Massive lies from governments usually need the threat of violence against the population to suppress the truth. In the end it always comes down to enforcement by violence. We already know that EVERY shop in Australia will have to increase prices due to the Carbon Tax. The Government has said that the Tax will increase costs, that's why they are paying welfare payments to most households to compensate for it. Shops will also have their costs increased by the Tax but they receive no compensation. Hence by the government's own admission shops will HAVE to increase their prices because of the Carbon Tax.

The thread of violence is used to gag shop owners from being truthful with their customers about the Tax cost. The implied violence is this: If you tell the truth to your customers you will be fined. If you do not pay the fine you will be summonsed. If you ignore the summons people with guns, clubs, tazers and mace on their belts will come to your shop and take you away.

Shops and restaurants (and every other type of business) already face fines of up to $1.1 million for being in breach of Competition and Consumer Act 2010 i.e. lying to people.

Thanks Oz, was reading an article in the Weekend Australian about this. Apparently there is a guide from the ACCC about the carbon tax and it explains to businesses the guidelines for telling consumers what effect carbon tax has had on prices.

Edit to add: here it is
    http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/1017091

Edit to add again: it's really quite a bizarre path the ACCC has taken, I'm sure some unscrupulous operators will raise their prices under the guise of the carbon tax, but it's patently obvious that the ACCC's role here is to ensure that the Government gets no flak at all.

It's just bully-boy tactics on the part of the Government, witness:

They don't care if prices are raised, they don't even want to know - just don't blame the carbon tax if you do decide to raise prices.

Yeah, because so many businesses would otherwise be saying "Yes, our prices have gone up because our main contractor is under water on his fourth negatively geared investment property and jacked up his prices".

This fine is simply to prevent businesses from passing on price hikes under the guise of carbon tax.

    Logically it makes sense.

BUT, I just don't get why they'd need to hire a bunch of 'carbon cops', that's bullshyt.

Waste of tax payers money. Plenty of other things which are more important to go after for the ACCC but nooooo they aren't as important since it just affect us plebs (citizens) and not the big government.

Another joke of a government department.

I have noticed reports on the Aluminium smelters, Qantas and a few other business that are sacking people, go out of their way to mention that their actions are not a result of the tax on CO2.

Not that it matters, because they are still sacking people, but it makes a bit of sense if they are wanting to ensure no further political financial penalties will be thrown at them. A bit of negative truth-speak, saying it's "not the CO2 tax" when no one is asking is the same as saying "it is the CO2 tax" for anyone who is listening.

Can it get any more insane? Sure it can and probably will. The politicians are geniuses ... at screwing everything up, inflating their own egos, claiming failure as success and arguing that black is white.

Businesses will just start laying off people in the droves.
    Thats the bottom line.
Any body who doesn't employ people may not understand the Australian government has left Small business high and dry and many of us are like why bother, when down sizing is so much easier and less stressful and we don't have to dip into our mortgages to fill the short fall at times
    The Silver lining has evaporated!

This threat is not about stopping businesses from lying. It is designed to make business owners to frightened to tell the truth.

No doubt this new "Carbon Police" administration is going to cost us millions of dollars a year "for our own protection". No doubt the senior positions will be incredibly well remunerated from taxpayer funds, and no doubt those positions will be all filled by ex union and ex Labor party stalwarts who are owed cushy favours. And no doubt they will make an example of some innocent people to justify their newly created cushy ride. And, no, I will not be putting up any prices due to the Carbon Tax. Like most businesses I will cut costs in other areas to compensate.

When is Gillard going to be fined in excess of 1 million dollars for lying to people about the Carbon Tax?
