Did anyone else in Melbourne hear on this mornings 3AW "Rumour File" that NPA is currently printing new polymer Drachmas for Greece? Maybe Grexit is just around the corner....
That's a real juicy rumour. I'll just add that Greece's financial minister is a duel national of Greece and Australia so there's that connection....
Same Drachmageddon rumour from 3 years ago- http://www.theguardian.com/business/2012/may/29/greek-drachma-rumours-banknote-printer
I agree. If Greece was going to introduce a new Drachma based currency, would they have another EU country print it? Australia is the world leader in polymer note technology. There just might be something to this mornings Rumour File rumour...
Who would trust the Greeks to pay for their new notes? (Mugabe failed to pay for that last run of Zim notes)
Not that I believe the rumor. Not surprised they're being evasive though, if grexit happens I'm sure they'll want the business, don't want to nix yourself from a list of hopefuls in the future because you said the wrong thing now. Maybe there is some early design process or prototyping going on, either at request or on spec on the companies own initiative, in either case as a just in case, so they can't outright deny. It wouldn't be the stupidest idea in the world to have a fall back position ready of a grexit actually happens, if nothing else it would certainly add a lot of credibility to any negotiations when they said they were prepared to walk, even if that weren't actually the case.
